Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Magnesia Bank

The Magnesia Bank is situated not far from the Quay in North Shields. Unfortunately, Google Maps does not easily show that it's up a substantial flight of steps from the quayside. So, I arrived here a little worn out.

To be honest, the climb was not really worth it. Signs stated that they always have a real ale on. But the reality is that there were none. Sharp's Atlantic on keg was offered to me instead, which I politely declined. Other options I could see were Carling, Stella Artois, Birra Moretti, Strongbow Dark Fruit, Bud Light & John Smith's.

The interior is large. I sat in a dark area to the left of the bar as you enter. At the rear of this area was a stage, where live music is performed. This is clearly a strong point of the pub. Unfortunately, this was where the positives finish. The worst of 4 pubs I tried in the town.

You enter into the middle of the pub, with the main bar facing you. To the left was a raised area with table and chairs. Further on was a large stage area, with stage curtains and some seating around the walls. The right hand side featured a baby grand piano and conservatory, the barman explained that the piano was a get up and play free for all, obviously if you could play it of course.
We called early on a Monday eve and the pub was empty. The barman explained that the pub is very busy at weekends. My disappointment here was the pub wasn't cleaned after the weekend and when visiting the loos my feet nearly stuck to the floor. The bar counter also wasn't the best. There were four Jarrow beers on handpump, tried the Rivet Catcher then moved on.

A few changes since last report as now has only four Jarrow Brewery beers and no guests on handpull. Not many customers while visiting last night.

Now has been taken over by Jarrow Brewery and sells 3 Jarrow beers, 4 Guest beers and 3 Ciders. A great improvement on the last owners. It is still one of the best music venues on North Tyneside.
