My first visit to Sheffield FC's ground at Dronfield - they're due to move to a new ground in Sheffield soon - so I thought it was about time I darkened the doors of this Thornbridge pub. It may be no surprise to some that I am not a fan of Thornbridge - it's something about their beers, something about the way they run their pubs, something about mission statements made up of three nouns: Innovation, Passion and Knowledge. (Maybe it's a coincidence, but I think not - Sheffield FC has one of those too: Integrity, Respect and Community.) The Coach & Horses is a stone-built house on the northern edge of Dronfield, with a football stadium in the back yard. The building has traditional bay windows and a small garden in front, but internally it's been opened out into one room with pillars and beams - fortunately not fake wooden ones. There's some wood panelling on some of the walls, though I don't know whether it's original. I do know that it's been painted in maroon and grey.
The bar counter is handsome and massive, and certainly not original to this pub as it would not have fitted in any of the old rooms! There are six hand pumps with five Thornbridge beers (including Jaipur and Lord Marples) and a real cider. It was quite busy, with queues forming as match time approached but being rapidly whittled down with exemplary service. My Lord Marples was pretty good; though it's not a favourite of mine it went down well. The background music was pretty awful, with only 12 minutes between two performances of Uptown Girl by Billy Joel, which must be some sort of record. Yes, I know it's a record - oh, never mind. On the second occasion I heard some people singing along, so maybe this is going to be the new Sweet Caroline. Heaven Help Us All.

The ever-reliable C&H had the full complement of five Thornbridge ales on my last visit a couple of days back. I tried the Vanilla Stout, Colorado and Jaipur which all came out well. The ‘five thirds with a snack’ tasting trays are still available (six quid) and three pint pitchers with a snack (£11). Also a real cider is now stocked. The once-pristine cream carpet is now looking a bit grubby, presumably after being trampled on by a thousand muddy feet from the football stadium behind. There has, however, been a light refurbishment and a lick of paint. The pub now appears to be dog friendly also. One downside was that the teenage staff were larking about a bit too much, annoying one or two of the customers in the process who thought they were in a pub for grown-ups.

A re-visit the other day found five Thornbridge Ales on the go, three of which were over 5%. The three I tried (yeah, those three) were all exemplary. Plenty of interesting keg and bottled choices as usual. The pub has been well and truly found by the middle-class locals but the average drinker can still happily chug a few back undisturbed thanks to the place being full of football fans every second Saturday, which keeps pretensions in check. If you like Thornbridge ales, this one should be top of your list especially given the very reasonable prices (£3 for a pint of Jaipur!). Shame the fire isn't a real one.

A tastefully renovated roadside pub just outside Dronfield owned by Sheffield FC* (whose ground is situated to the pub's rear and use the place as a post-match bar), stocking mainly Thornbridge beers along with top-notch guests (Dark Star on my last visit as well as a number of unusual keg products (Sierra Nevada etc) and many interesting bottled beers from around the world - prices are quite reasonable given the location. The interior has been moved towards an upmarket pub-restaurant direction but still holds a warm welcome for drinkers. The corridor to the loos has a couple of football shirts hung up including a signed North Korea shirt. The toilets are usually spotless. The pub also features CAMRA magazines, a book exchange and some board games; again, drinker-friendly. 10 minutes from Dronfield BR and well worth the trip.
* - The world's oldest football club founded in 1857 (though they haven't been at this current location for more than a handful of years)

The Coach and Horses is a decent looking pub that is about a 10 minute walk north from the train station.
There is a small seating area at the front to watch the traffic go by and once inside there was a single room with the bar facing,the room was carpeted with normal tables and chairs,i quite liked this room and could have happily stayed longer if not on a pub crawl.
There were five real als on the bar and i think all from Thornbridge i had a drink of Thornbridge Lord Marples and this was a very nice drink the other beers were Jaipur,Galaxia,Black Harry and 1857.
There was a decent amount of customers in and i thought the pub had a very nice laid back atmosphere.

Great food, football and the best kept Thornbridge beers I've found anywhere. What's not to like?
