From the outside we saw the same tired building that has become all too familiar with todays brewery owned pubs and it is such a shame those breweries are still able to get away with blatantly ignoring the needs of their tenants. For when we walked through the front doors of the Travellers Rest at meltham, we were presented with a most beautiful, quaint country pub. A huge open fire, welcoming staff and a range of wines and cask ales. From the inside you'd swear you were in a different place, a portal perhaps where the doorway once was. The food, not frozen microwave meals, and not over-priced, over-bearing haute cuisine. Country food, homemade - and properly homemade I might add - at a very reasonable price. At the end of the evening we chatted to the bar staff for nearly an hour, with nobody casually cleaning around us, turning things off or ushering us out of the door. This pub is a must for anyone wanting what I suspect we all crave - a good, honest, British pub.
