Odd little place with a weird locally atmosphere where we felt very much like interlopers to a private party (were the staff and three locals really all messaging each other on WhatsApp?). Bland over-lit modern interior, although trying to be retro with some black and white wood and loads of hanging jugs – but it just felt odd and jarring. Four pumps at the bar with just Loxhill Biscuit on, however it was a good quality pint (NBSS 3.5) although it should only have been a half...! Piped music best described as ‘eccentric’. We had a good laugh about it outside but it was an uncomfortable 20 minutes to sit through.

A roadside inn which offers B&B, it has a riverside garden with its own private fishing licence, although the two are separated by the A36, so you take your life and your beer in your hands when crossing. There is also a large car park, this too on the other side of the road from the pub. The building, which has 17th Century origins and was substantially changed in Victorian times, has been reorganised to provide a hotel foyer at one end, while the original door has been closed to prevent customers walking straight into the road. There is a skittle alley which doubles as a function room. The staff were welcoming, but the atmosphere was a bit dead. Food is the usual average restaurant food, reasonably priced and well cooked. Two ales on – I had a pint of Butcombe,s which was in fair condition. Worth stopping if passing, and I’d be happy to stay here for the night.

Staff friendly and very efficient - there was a huge birthday bash going on at the time we were there, but it didn't affect the service we received at all. Good range of beers and excellent food. All in all, good value and above average.
