The only GBG 2022 listed pub in the town, not much competition of course. It’s had a severe makeover since my last visit, now a tasteful if bland hotel bar, the bar is multi area giving quieter but not private spaces in what looks like three rooms knocked into one. The middle space has the counter and a couple of tables, beyond is an area of tables, chairs and banquettes, with a front area in banquettes, stools and tables, the furniture is all chunky and the carpets are in tartan. Six pulls of Yorkshire beers, one not in use but Theakston, Taylors, Ossett and Rudgate all represented along with Cumbrian Way. Keg drinkers are well catered for with a mix of familiar and unfamiliar beers over four T-Bars plus a solo Guinness. I wouldn’t rate the beer as GBG but I guess York Camra are in the “beggars can’t be choosers” boat in this town. The elderly middle class clientele didn’t help me love this place either, although a few working class locals wandered in.

Poshish, funny shaped hotel bar, it has various areas that may once have been separate rooms but is now basically open plan. Carpeted throughout with a mix of bench seating and of course tables and chairs as it's part dining room especially towards the back. It still has games machines, a juke box and big screens, the one behind the bar was showing adverts. Usual group of kegs plus seven handpulls with a good mix of ales, two from York, one each from Great Newsome, Black Sheep and John Smiths cask, the sixth pump has Thatchers cider and the seventh was blank. There is also a blackboard with some interesting coming guests. The beer quality was fine as well. Quite busy at lunchtime with a good sprinkling of locals.
