Station pub. Front bar has fairly basic décor and it feels like the fabric of the place has been rather neglected, some obvious bits of DIY needed. Pine cladding and polystyrene ceiling tiles take you in a time machine back to 1976. Just the one ale (Rhymney) which was under-par and turned up in a Grolsch glass – I suspect they don’t sell much of it. Proceedings salvaged somewhat by a welcoming barmaid, probably the best service of the weekend’s crawling. We decamped to the rear sports room to do some arrow-chucking. Some effort has been made in here, with odd slatted bench seating, nice modernist pool-themed wall hangs and a pool-ball clock. Gas fire from the British Gas showroom era, my Nan had almost the exact same model. Can’t really say that this one is worth a diversion for unless you want a game of darts.

A very welcome sight for train commuters only a minutes walk from the station, as in the name, this pub has a strong railway theme, always a good pint with reliable experienced staff.
