Fairly dull place aimed at the late-night topers. Quite large inside with too much mushy pea paint which is a pet peeve. TV football up against piped music, schizophrenic. Six pumps majoring on cider; cask ale-wise the Doom Bar was off so a surprisingly palatable Hobgoblin Gold (NBSS 3.5) sufficed via a polite barmaid. Gets a point for the beer quality and service but I have the underlying feeling I got lucky this evening. 5.5

Rather better than I had hoped based on previous reviews, I found the pub welcoming, the staff friendly and the atmosphere convivial. Plenty of rugby paraphernalia dotted around, and I wasn’t sure whether that was ephemeral or a standard part of the decor. Maybe it’s had a change of management.  I agree that the facelift feels a bit contrived, but the food looked average and it was a comfortable place to spend a few hours in the afternoon.  Ales on were Doombar, which was average, and Proper Job which was in excellent condition.  The bank of ciders referred to below was also there, and there were ads for various cheap drink deals, indicating their target audience.  Annoyingly I forgot to use my CAMRA vouchers, but it still wasn’t outrageously priced for the area.  I’d be happy to go back.

Old town pub now in pedestrian area which has been facelifted to a fairly naff state. A nice row of pumps greets you but on closer inspection just offering GK IPA and Doom Bar, plus flagging up 4 Lilley's boxed ciders. Staff straddle the borderline between efficient and officious.

A large solid looking pub that hasn't added any character to itself since Blackthorns visit all those years ago. A cheap but decent looking pub grub menu, sports TV and flashing fruit machines are the order of the day here. Three beers were available from the six pumps, Pedigree, Exmoor Rugby Gold and Hanlons Yellow Hammer.A functionalpub but I wouldn't bother next time round.

A good sized pub just off the main shopping street, but lacking much in the way of any individual character or personality. It looks to have been recently refurbished and was tidy enough, but that’s about all I can really say in it’s favour.

There are several different rooms all full of tables and chairs, and food is clearly a major draw here. We didn’t try it ourselves so I can’t comment on it, but it certainly seemed popular with barely a free table in the pub. Then again, perhaps that’s inevitable given it’s proximity to the shops, the time of year and the time of day (early evening) that we visited. A sign advertised curry and steak nights, and a board listed a selection of pies that were available. These are apparently available as part of a “pie and pint” deal for £5.50.

Decor is unremarkable with flock wallpaper and carpet throughout, except for a tiled area around the bar and numerous black and white photos on the walls. There were also a couple of plasma screens on the wall and a notice advertised a regular quiz night. A sign on the bar proclaimed “real ales sold here” but since they only had one on, that seemed somewhat misleading. Clearly somebody should have removed it.

The solitary beer offering was Doom Bar. There were pumps for EPA and London Pride, but these had both apparently run out. Not a good sign at 6:00pm on a Friday evening. Who on earth does their stock control? Ciders faired no better with just Strongbow available, unfortunately.
