Re-opened in May 2015. No obvious internal changes bar some bunting being hung (it still feels a bit stark and needs more cosification). Four ales on, two West Berks, Ramsbury Gold and a good drop of Loose Cannon Porter. Got chatting with a few friendly old boys who were holding court in the main bar, which made for an enjoyable end to an evening’s pubbing.

After a period of going through licensees like a revolving door, I took in a couple of revisits last month. It has certainly been tarted-up since 2008, a lot starker and lighter inside. It seems to have gone more foody with a major dining area to the right and a small enclosed drinking area to the left. Four ales - three West Berks with Redemption Porter as a guest on one visit. West Berks Isis Pilsner on the keg font and many of their bottles available. The West Berks beers were in good nick but the Redemption was pretty lifeless, should have taken it back really. Staff a bit hit-and-miss; youngsters, some of whom aren’t really suited to the pub side though others are friendly and helpful. Features of note included shove h’apenny and a wood-burning stove. The enclosed beer garden is cute. Quiet both times I’ve been in during the afternoon. Personally I prefer something a bit more traditional and I’m not a fan of the new look. Rated 7

West Berkshire Brewery's first pub (opened in 2005). Pretty much what a village local should be - good beer (essentially a West Berkshire brewery tap), good atmosphere and good conversation. There’s a collection of tankards on display, an open fire and no music or TV. Pub is dog-friendly. I think I purchased some very nice home-made spicy chutney from the bar as well! Rather erratic opening times, check before you travel. Rated 8.

The brewery, who own the pub, said it made the decision to temporarily close the doors because it is currently considered a ‘loss making venue’.The brewery said it had not yet made a decision on the pub’s future and would make no further comment.
