Update Nov 2023
Reopened after a closure and much improved, with the interior refurbished in a tasteful modern style with muted colours and tidy furnishings. Best though is the restoration of a nice set of cask ales - three from Thwaites (Original, IPA and Gold) plus a guest (Ainsty Citra) and condition was good. Food is now Spanish-style tapas. A welcome reinvigoration of a useful pub, although parking nearby is still tricky.

Update Dec 2022
Locals pub still suffering from its earlier facelift, leaving a rather bland interior with a lot of very dated dining room furniture. Entertainment is now provided by a clutch of sport TVs, a dartboard, and a corner set up for live music. This is still a Thwaites pub with a nice bank of 5 handpumps, but sadly all out of use as "we couldn't sell it". Wainwright and Thwaites Smooth are on keg plus usual eurofizz. Disappointing for what was once a fair pub, however the lease is up for sale so possibly a new manager might boost it.

Original review Oct 2014
Thwaites pub by Acomb Green, as name suggests. Appears to have been recently refurbished and is perhaps a bit too clean and tidy to have much character. Nothing much in the way of pub pastimes as a distraction and left hand side given over to diners. The only draught ale was Wainwright, which is pleasant enough but could do with some variety from the range. My impression was somewhere for a quick pint or quiet meal, rather than an evening out.

Formerly the Britannia before owners Thwaites decided on a poncy name, at least it still has nice tile work and architectural mouldings on the outside; it’s double fronted but the internal walls have been removed to leave a single large space. The counter on the rear wall is equipped with a couple of T-Bars , Guinness and Carling solos and five pulls, Old Rosie on one and a couple of Thwaites’ own on two more. I thought it was a bit funeral home like to start with but a pub bullshitter boring the other oldies with guff about music and the Goon Show saved the day. Does lots of live music apparently. Dead screens at lunchtime, at least it has banquette seating, white walls and old photos. If only the beer was better.

When i first tried doing this pub it was called The Britannia but was closed so it was nice to finally get to do this pub.
Once inside there is a single oblongish shaped room with the bar facing, the room is carpeted and has very comfy bench seating and normal tables and chairs, plus a couple of tall tables and chairs in the middle of the room.
The pub is a Thwaites tied house, there were three real ales on the bar plus a real cider,i had a drink of Thwaites Wainwright which was quite a nice drink, the other beers were Lancaster Bomber and Sticky Sponge.
Background music was playing, the pub was empty on my Saturday dinner visit which was a shame.
This is a decent comfortable pub to have a drink in.
