Alex Conway left this review about The White Lion

The White Lion as mentioned below is the latest pub taken over by the Lincoln Green Brewery.
After several years of closure the Lion has been revived with a complete makeover and resembling nothing of the previous incarnation. Now technically two separate bars with access via a connecting door the pub should really be classed as one enterprise.
I didn’t venture in to the Blackshale Crafty/Foodie side instead staying in the much smaller traditional style “pub” side. The Decor is described well below and has been done in a traditional style which I like. The only criticism is to me it seems like a take on decking a pub out in an authentic style as a gimmick without being all that genuine. Perhaps this a little harsh as it is new and needs that lived in feel (it still smells of fresh paint).
Beer is the Usual Lincoln Green stuff but at a premium vs a lot of their other outlets to account for the ever-increasing middle-class Beeston with the core range all coming in at £4 or over. On the bar are 8 hand pulls dispensing their core range and on this occasion 2 seasonals and a guest of Dancing Duck Dark Drake Stout. I find Lincoln Green quite middle of the road but can happily drink their Hood Bitter over their quite average Hoppy Pale Ales. On this visit it was cool and well-conditioned NBSS3 and went down well. My previous visit back in the summer only a few days after it opened was not so successful with the beer in noticeably poor/average condition. I think the subsequent six months have helped it find its feet.
Overall while it doesn’t compete with the big boys of the Beeston real Ale Scene It is a perfectly acceptable addition to a Beeson Crawl and one we will now always add on for a pint when doing the holy Trinity of the Vic, Star & Crown.

Two pubs in one you may say, as each half has a completely different style and set up to the other. The White Lion part has been kitted out to be a traditional local's pub, which was very impressive. A decent sized oak finished bar area hosting 8 handpumps, timber flooring, banquette seating, standard tables and chairs. The walls were painted and wallpapered in sections along with a panelled wall.
I especially liked the collection of beer trays from various breweries back in the day. The secret door in the panelling which led you into the Blackshale bar also added a good novelty factor.
The Blackshale bar and kitchen was a decent size, along with a good sized exterior beer garden. This side of the pub mainly catered for craft and draft beer options, along with food and beer matching. The staff were all friendly and chatty, and my cask ale was superb.

Graham Coombs left this review about The White Lion

As the previous reviewer mentioned, this is now a pub in two halves just designed to confuse and leased by Lincoln Green. The front part, named White Lion and entered from a side door, has had a smart, woody refurbishment and has a great range of ten or so of their ales on handpump. The back part, entered through the main entrance on the other side, is called Blackshale Kitchen and Bar and is a much larger, modern room with a large outdoor area behind. This has a serious row of keg taps with just a couple of handpumps. The speciality of this side is matching food and beer, with recommendations on the menu. Despite appearing to be two separate businesses, they are just one pub and there is a 'secret' connecting door between the two, as well as a serving hatch connecting the bars. Both sides are quite nice and I could happily drink in either.

Now reopened and run by Lincoln Green Brewery in some sort of partnership with Star Inns (Heineken) after a costly refurbishment. The front of the pub is the traditional Lincoln Green White Lion while the rear section is a larger craft oriented bar called the Blackshale Bar & Kitchen.

Pub looks a bit grim from the outside but is clean and tidy once inside , the interior looks like it was knocked about in the 80s leaving one large L shaped room , the bar is straight ahead as you enter , to the right is the dining area which leads to the function room , on the left of the entrance is a piano above which is a rack well stocked with papers/magazines .
The left of the pub is more lounge like with a few different seating areas and a full bookcase for use not decoration , the walls are decorated with a variety of paintings by local artists and are all for sale , the patio doors lead to the raised outside patio area with lovely views of the car park and local martial arts club .
Two banks of 3 handpulls with four on during my visit , Caladonian Deuchars , Flying Scotsman , Golden IPA and Theakstons Old Peculier , service was friendly as were the locals on my midweek afternoon visit .
Its not really my sort of pub but it seems to be doing its job as a community pub (its got an ACV)and was pretty busy with a good variety of ages eating and drinking.
And for the previous Xenophobic reviewer the annoying foreign music was Fado from Portugal .

Alan Winfield left this review about The White Lion

Update:

The White Lion has had a major refurbishment,i was'nt going to do this pub,but when i looked at the gawdy outside signage i had to go in and see if it was as bad inside,it was.
Once inside the pubs layout is pretty similar to my last visit, there is a large L shaped room with the bar facing, the seating is mainly bench type and small stools, the floor is carpeted.
There are now three pumps on the bar,i had a drink of Caledonian Golden XP which was ok,the other beers were Caledonian Flying Scotsman and Deuchars IPA.
The pub was almost empty on my mid Tuesday afternoon visit, there was some very annoying foreign type music playing during the short time i was in this pub.
This is a very dissapointing pub,my rating goes from a 6 to a 5.

Recent visit 28/1/2014

The White lion used to be an Home Ales tied house.
This pub is on the corner of a busy road junction and is now very close to the new tesco supermarket. This is quite a large pub and it has been knocked into one large room that has got different drinking areas there was only one real ale on here which was Greene king IPA this was too warm.
This is quite a smart pub but lacks customers and is up for let at the moment i hope things improve here in the future.

Mark Davey left this review about The White Lion

The White Lion has just undergone a huge face lift. The outside has been repainted and the inside looks freshly painted too. To entice customers (probably in anticipation of the tram coming to Beeston) the pub has been renamed "The White Lion Bar and Kitchen" Unfortunately there is a very limited supply of ale on the bar. on calling in, all that was to be seen were three hand pulls all proclaiming Duchers IPA? We walked out again and went round the corner to the Crown. Must be ten years since I last went in the White Lion and it will probably be ten more before I try it again.
