This is a traditional ale house with six beers and a cider available at the time of our visit. The beers were Sharps Doom Bar, Courage Best and two each from Oldershaw and Milestone. I had one of the Milestone beers and my drinking companion went for the Courage, and both beers were in very good condition. Judging by our visit and those of others before us, this is a good reliable beer house.

A good traditional pub serving seven ales from chrome finished handpulls. The pub is narrow but goes back quite a way. There was a small seated area on the right as you enter. Up a few steps to a tiny area before the bar and then up a couple of more steps the bar area. The rear area of the pub was the largest space. I went for the Elgoods Cambridge, which was spot on.

Excellent beer pub. Great range on the bar during our visit from Sunchaser to Elgoods Black Dog. I had a pint of Castle Ale which was excellent. No music at 2pm just a crowd of drinkers and late lunch eaters. The pub was so good that we returned at 6pm for a second pint having crawled round most of the decent watering holes in the town.

A visit to this pub was amazing, the staff were fun and knowlegeable, and helped me choose a beer I had not thought of trying before, the music was exellent with the band playing most of my favourite stuff, from eagles to jeff wayne war of the worlds!! definitely going there again!!the layout of the pub is cosy, with plenty of nooks and crannies if you wanted to talk, or up near the band space to stand. Oh and the toilets were so clean and tidy, smelt nice, and massive!!

A greater range of beers than on previous visits but this really is a small pub,with an inefficient seating arrangement in the lower front area and too crowded to justify allowing a poor acoustic band to occupy most of the rear seating area beyond the bar.The owners need to focus on either ale or music but trying to do both leaves a lot of punters feeling frustrated.Shame.

An attractive looking pub on the main road in an attractive town. Inside it's a higgeldy piggeldy affair with a number of small areas on different levels but there really isn't that much space when it's busy, which it always seems to be. This is probably due to the focus on live music which is obviously successful in drawing the crowds. Six real ales are offered including Mordue Ginger Ale, Everards Sunchaser and the dreaded Bombardier although these do change. The Ginger Ale and Sunchaser were ok but not nearly good enough to tempt us into second pints and that seems to be the issue with The Castle. On previous visits I've never had a beer here that I wanted a second pint of.
