Seems to have improved a bit since my last visit, although we had to remind one of the barstaff 3 times what we had ordered. We'd only ordered 3 drinks!! I had a couple of decent pints of the festival ales on 2 separate visits over our 2 days in Shrewesbury. Full of shrieking kids from the Uni on the Wednesday night though.

A decent enough Wetherspoons really, but it suffers from the usual Wetherspoons problem of not enough bar staff. I've called in 4 times recently and left twice due to lack of service. When I have managed to get served the beer has been pretty good. The service issue is a problem across most Wetherspoons. Give the managers the budget to employ extra staff at their discretion Tim and you'll sell more beer !
Called in last night and asked for a pint of Bath Barnstormer which was on the bar in front of me. It's off she said. "OK I'll have a pint of the Shropshire Lad then please". That's off, she said. I said "Why aren't the pumpclips turned round then" she just shrugged. "Have you got any guest ales on then?" Oh yes she said Pedigree and Abbot. Goodbye I said. What a poor attitude.

Typical spoons affair with regular spoons furnishings. Pleased to report that it did offer a short relief from the average prices. £1.99 a pint to be exact! I sampled a pint of Festival Gold by a Welsh brewery called Waen. It was a light golden and hoppy and was very drinkable.

Pleasant barmaid serving behind the bar.

Worth a visit.

Nice to walk into a Spoons with more of a hotel feel. Deco was chocolate brown walls to the right and turquoise and matching patterned wallpaper on the left, also had a stone feature wall. Summer Cider Festival on so down to a limited selection of ales. I went for the Koroibos ale brewed between Everards Brewery and Corfu Brewery. This beer is available in all Spoons pubs throughout the Olympics.

A decent enough spoons situated by the Welsh Bridge and overlooking the new Theatre Severn just across the river , formerly known as the Britania(and before that the Harp)the name was changed in the late 1980s , it has the usual cheap drinks and meal deals , there is a small car park out front with a popular outside drinking area , there are the usual TVs and a few paintings by local artists . The ale selection is pretty good with 12 handpulls in two banks of six either side of a partion on the main bar , the usual Ruddles/Abbot Ale/Pedigree selection tend to be on the left hand bank as you enter , the more intresting local(ish) ales Three Tuns/Woods/Slaters are usually on the right hand bank so it pays to have a look round first as the beer list tends to be well hidden .
It suffers from the spoons curse of not enough staff so expect a wait at busy times (2 bar staff if your lucky at one of the busiest pubs in town !!)
If you do get served the beer is normally pretty good , its a decent enough pub and the ale choice is good but there are far better pubs in town

Roger Button left this review about The Shrewsbury Hotel (Wetherlodge)

Strategically situated opposite the Welsh bridge, this expansive Wetherspoons Lodge ticks all the usual boxes in respect of beers, food and discounted prices. The interior is quite large and spacious but typically ‘Spoons in the décor department with the screened booths, history snippets (Darwin & Telford being among the better known personailities from the area), silent TV’s and laden bookcases that would shame many libraries. The pick of the old town pictures is an aeriial view of the town taken in 1946. It was the tail end of the November Beer Festival on my visit so I don’t know what the usual run of ales is but I would expect it to be slightly better than average given the size of the pub and the competition in town. Since you generally know what you’re gonna get with Wetherspoons, the Shrewsbury Hotel will not raise or dash your expections but, as decent as the place is, you can't help feel that the place should be more interesting than it is.

Conveniently placed convenience. Another large Wetherspoons house with everything you'd expect from that chain - cheap average ale, cheap average food. Better service than most Wetherspoons I've visited.
