Many years ago my Wife and I used to visit this pub about 5 or 6 times a year for a drink and an evening meal. However,due to what can only be described as unforeseen circumstances, these visits ceased for about 8 years until,one evening in 2011, we returned fully intending to have a meal there. Imagine our surprise when we found only one other customer on the premises and he was absorbed in the TV. The place itself looked tired and neglected and the menu was only a shadow of its former self. So we left to dine elsewhere.
We returned the other evening,just over 2 years since that disappointing experience and were delighted to find a vast improvement had taken place. It had been redecorated and refurbished,complete with new carpeting throughout. Most of all it had customers and many of them were dining. There was a good choice of food from the menu and the "Specials Board". We dined and the food was enjoyable with generous portions and competitively priced.
Being a Free House, there was a good selection of beers and I counted four different brands of lager on draught.
One minor complaint is that our table felt a bit sticky and had obviously not been polished but rather it had been wiped over with a cloth that had been used to wipe up beer spillage.
Happy to report that The Great Western is back on track.
