This place has improved immensely as far as beer choice is concerned. The 12 handpumps do still have the 3 Wethers nightmares on but the rest of the guest ales have been very good and the variety of beer styles has been welcome. Whether this continues is to be seen. Its still full of the more "down-to-earth" than its neighbour.

A pretty dire Wethers. Open plan with raised areas to both left and right. It does tend to get the less fortunate in and the I.Q level can struggle to get out of single figures sometimes but its one for the shoppers usually. Usual beer choices.

This is more an old school outlet compared to the other one in Birkenhead but was busier and seemed to be better run. It's set in a boring looking modern brick building and is a square room with the usual fixtures. I found a table down a narrow aisle leading to the ground floor toilets and the tables here are so close together that not even size zero models could sit at neighbouring tables.
The bar has two sets of six hand pumps which had cider, Abbot &
Banks's Alpha 5 IPA doubled up, Phoenix Wobbly Bob, Great Newsome Holderness Dark, Naylor's Spring Loaded, Mauldon's Cuckoo, Wolf Sirius Dog Star and Peerless Triple Blonde. I went for an old favourite the Wobbly Bob (£2.65) which wasn't clear but tasted OK.
I thought this one was pretty average.

A neat, if small JDW right next to the market. Lots of old boys in who all knew each other on our visit. Raised area to the left, almost like a balcony, the rest is pretty standard. A good selection of ales on our visit. My pint of Acorn Barnsley Gold was in good nick and was the cheapest pint I've ever seen in a JDW especially after I used a 50p voucher. I guess the prices reflect the relative wealth of the majority of the clientele. We didn't mind it at all in here and it's way better than the other JDW in Birkenhead.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The John Laird (JD Wetherspoon)

Dull 'spoons, with the curved bar counter being about the only item of note. Seeming to attract an older clientele, mostly stopping off between the market and the nearby bus station I would guess. 12 handpumps, but half of these were off or "available soon". Nothing wrong with my pint of Peerless Hilbre Gold (£1.95), but nothing here to make me stay for another. (NB - Review dates from September 2011.)
