While this isolated pub is a very welcome sight, especially if you've arrived an hour early for your train at Garsdale station half a mile up the road, it is not by any stretch of imagination "superb in every way", as a previous reviewer had it. There are two rooms immediately upon entry, a stone floored cafe on the left, with a counter where you can get cakes, coffee and ice cream, if anyone is staffing it. Those wanting beer and the like need to go into the carpeted area to the right, which will necessitate removing muddy boots, if worn. My slightly wet cycling shoes seemed to pass muster (lucky I'd not been off-road). The cafe area has low sofas and a solid fuel stove, but the area in front of the bar has dining tables and chairs, and another sofa or two.
On the bar are four hand pumps (see photos). I was here on two separate occasions, nearly two months apart. The beers were exactly the same on both occasions; I think it's safe to assume that these are regulars. Probably the only noticeable difference between my two visits was that the weather was better in August. Would I come here again? Yes, why not - it's handy for the station.

One of the most isolated pubs that I know, on the main road from Hawes to Sedbergh in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. So remote, indeed, that they were due to film scenes for a new production of Wuthering Heights. “Too much Japanese script on the signs in Haworth”the barman informed me with much pride.
A typical Dales stone built house, the pub stands at the junction of the road from Kirkby Stephen, relatively close to Garsdale station and the famous Dandrymire viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle line. Inside, the decoration could be described as bohemian, especially so on our visit, when things were enlivened by the ghosties and whimsies of Halloween.
The landlady was away, but her parents were holding the fort admirably,attending to a few locals and walkers. I was excited to see Scotts 1816 from my beloved Copper Dragon Brewery, together with Bitters from Theakstons and Black Sheep. Adding to the seasonal mood was Hobgoblin from Wychwood.The food that lunchtime was good and hearty: I had a proper Yorkshire pudding filled with game stew, complete with chestnuts.
The gentlemen of our party were highly amused by the condom machine: alongside the weekend essentials was a slot dispensing tictac mints. Excellent pub, in grand walking and train watching country.
