According to the London Drinker they have now sold the lease to Sainsbury's.does this mean "the end is nigh?"

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Ship of Fools (JD Wetherspoon)

Not a very inspiring 'spoons, with some rather dubious clientele as well. Long rectangular bar, with several slightly-raised seating areas. Standard furniture and decor. A total of 15 handpumps along the counter, and there is usually a fair selection of real ales on in addition to the regular Abbot, Directors and Ruddles (e.g. the pint of Westerham Audit Ale I had on my last visit). Not really a place to linger, so OK for a quick pint before moving on.

The Ship of Fools is a Wetherspoons pub that is located handily across the road from East Croydon Railway Station. The interior is much larger than the standard Spoons frontage suggests as this pub stretches a long way back. There is a raised seating area against the front window and opposite the long bar that is located along the right hand wall. I counted 15 hand pumps and as my visit was on St Patrick’s Day afternoon it coincided with the JDW beer festival so there were many different ales available. Obviously there is a large selection of standard draught and cheap food is available all day. Three plasma screens are located throughout the pub and muted rolling news was being aired, but the Six Nations was advertised for later in the afternoon. I found the service to be friendly, but it wasn’t very busy during my visit. The George seems to be Croydon’s more popular Spoons and I also think that it has the edge.

I wouldn’t go out of my way to revisit here anytime soon.

Since my earlier review, this place has lost the title of 'Best Wetherspoons in Town' to the much improved George. Beer quality has become more variable of late and the team that ran it so efficiently a year or so ago seem to have been split up, so it's a bit of a mixed bag in terms of the service you get. Still a decent enough place for a drink and still the best option in West Croydon - this place, by virtue of it's close proximity to my place of work, was probably the pub I visited the most last year.

February 2010
This is probably Croydon's best Wetherspoons pub in terms of beer quality over the last 12 months. There are plenty of hand pumps on the long bar and there are usually at least 4 guest ales on offer. The quality has dipped a little of late, but generally the standard is very good.
The clientele is a typically mixed bunch, with the unsavoury drinkers usually favouring the raised area opposite the bar, so move to either the front or back if you want a bit of peace.
Staff are friendly and there is a reasonably settled team here, which makes for better service than the constantly changing line up of students in places like 'The George'.
West Croydon is devoid of decent pubs nowadays...this place is by far your best bet for a decent pint.

This is rather a dingy 'spoons in a rough part of Croydon and like other reviewers have noted, the raised area does attract a rum drinking contingent whose liberal use of profanities may cause offence. However I feel this is part of the local scene and the positive aspect of this pub is their ale quality ,which is consistently good. From the beer festival ales,my Holdens Burton Runner and Moorhouse Ambler Rambler were enjoyable. Its still a lot safer inside than on the streets outside, and the pub is never rammed which means service is efficient.Very convenient for West Croydon station and the best beer in the immediate viscinity.

The main bar has a couple of raised seating areas and there's an eating/family area at the rear, much like the layout of a lot of JDW's really. Good selection of festival ales available plus loads of TV screens showing Sky Sports.

About the best Wetherspoon's in Croydon.Light and airy inside with a good range of real ales which are usually in good order.Almost opposite West Croydon station.
