Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Minerva

Riverside pub with a number of different rooms. I spotted 3, but suspect there were more, as I didn't wander too far.

There is a podium near the entrance where you are greeted and shown to your reserved table if you have one, or fitted in somewhere if you don't. We created confusion as we were meeting people already present.

Tetley's Cask is the regular ale. 4 Guests were Abbeydale Reveller, Tapped Brew Co. Sorsby Stout & Allendale Hop On & Golden Plover. Tasting paddles are available.

A cosy and comfortable place where meals are served and families are welcome.

Occasionly on your travels you hit on a bit of a classic and this is one. Even with the too young/uninterested bar staff and the rancid smell from the bogs you can't hide this is a beautiful building in a fine setting with a big choice of good beer. Split into various spaces and sizes its a lovely pub to visit.

A revisit whilst on a conference – and little change from below. No arguments about the quality of the beer or the pub itself, but the staff seem impressively aloof of anyone not recognised as a regular (ironically enough, I actually recognised one of them from my last visit...).

April 2016
A multi-room gem, overlooking the Humber estuary. A flat iron shape building, the traditionally decorated interior makes for a relaxing place to sup with third length wood panelling, bottles on high shelves and the inevitable maritime memorabilia. A number of rooms which are all a bit different, the two to note are the ‘worlds smallest snug’ and the old brewery room at the rear which is now used for functions and also, occasionally, as a theatre. Also, you can sup outside which would make for a lovely summer’s afternoon. Six ales; Saltaire Triple Choc, Saltaire Raspberry, Tetley Bitter, Pedigree, Great Newsome Sleck Dust, Big Shed Battlefield Gold (very good nick). One downside were the staff, some of whom didn’t really belong in this sort of place (eg my barman struggled with the concept of halves). Overall though, it’s one that has to be done when you’re in Hull. Rated 8.5

This historic pub and former hotel has a great location overlooking the Humber and offers a fine traditional multi-room venue in a part of the Old Town that is otherwise lacking in this type of venue. The front porch leads you into a corridor with the main bar room to the right. This is a carpeted room with a nice curved dark wood servery along the back wall. The bar has a smart canopy that matches the counter and a simple mirrored bar back. Low stools and settles run opposite, along the front wall and offer some of the best views out towards the river. There are a couple more tables and the far end of the room in front of a fireplace with a City of Culture sign above and a board advertising various whisky options to one side. A TV in one corner was turned off, with some practically inaudible music floating around in the background somewhere. Elsewhere, a high shelf runs along the front wall, stacked with old beer bottles, whilst the pub's prominent nautical theme is evident from knot displays, old maps and various black and white photos of river life. To the left of the entrance is a small room in the thin end of this wedge shaped building, with light coloured walls and comfy banquette seating under more old photos of local industry. The corridor, which has a lovely coloured tile floor, leads on past a tiny snug which has room for three people to squeeze into its V-shaped space on fixed benches. Beyond are a couple more rooms, both smartly furnished but full of diners on a Sunday lunchtime, preventing me from having a proper nose around.
There was a wide ale range on the bar comprising North Riding Milk Chocolate Stout, Yorkshire Brewing Mutiny and Old Ebeneezer, Tetley Cask, Ossett Silver King and Great Newsome Frothingham Best. An extremely friendly barmaid served up a first class pint of the Milk Chocolate Stout and, not wanting to sit down with all the diners, I propped up the end of the bar and marvelled at the large quantities of ale flying out of the pumps.
This is a quality pub in a part of town that seems to be dominated by warehouse conversion cafes and bars. The pub has a very appealing layout that I was a little disappointed to not be able to fully explore, and must be a great spot for a drink in the summer with its views over the river. I found it a welcoming place with bags full of character and accept that I was unlucky to time my visit with peak food serving period. Another top Hull ale house to include on any crawl around town.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Minerva

Very attractive riverside pub in the old dock area, established in 1829, with a thoroughly nautical theme as you would expect. Retains a multi-room layout comprising the bar, lower room, semi-open back seating area, side lounge and apparently the smallest snug in Britain. Six real ales on handpump, ranging from Tetley's Cask and Pedigree, through Big Shed Battlefield Gold and Great Newsome Sleck Dust, to two from Saltaire - Raspberry Blonde and Triple Chocoholic (£1.75, half). First rate.

An outstanding pub in every sense of the word, looks good from the outside and does what it says on the can inside, six handpulls dispensing the beers as listed by Steve below, the Saltaire Triple Chocoholic was my beer of the day, well worth the walk from the train station.

Another well deserved nine again, this is a gem. The pub had a nice laidback atmosphere and had lots of comfortable areas to enjoy a beer or a bite to eat. We sat at the front windows, where I became quite engaged watching a small ship, turning to come into dock. You could also see the Lincolnshire headland across the river Humber.

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Minerva

A classic flat iron shaped pub with great views over the Humber Estuary and a very good range of real ale from 6 handpumps. It is worth wandering around the multi roomed interior on various levels as described very accurately below .Pub grub (mains around £8)is served and most diners base themselves in the back bar which has a small serving hatch ,while the front bar has more of a pub atmosphere,an unused flatscreen and slightly loud muzak but that can be forgiven in such an authentic interior.Beside the regular Tetley bitter,a lot of regional ales were available on my trip with two from Saltaire including a tip top Raspberry Blonde.A pub not to be missed when in Hull.

Steve of N21 left this review about The Minerva

After starting in a fairly bland ‘Spoons followed by Hull’s new Craft bar the third pub of the day was a great return to a traditional pub and contender for my pub of the day on our crawl.
The Minerva probably has it all you could want in a traditional pub. Several rooms of different character, including three front rooms primarily for drinking, although one of them is the smallest pub room in Britain with its one table and three seat, and then two larger rooms aligned more to enjoying the traditional pub food menu at the other side of the central bar serving area.
Due to its location on the Humber water front there is plenty of nautical memorabilia as you would expect, including Tee shirts on sale supporting the “Save the Dead Bod” campaign, which is reference to a famous local bit of graffiti by sailors in the 1960’s that is in danger of being destroyed by ongoing developments of the Humberside water front.
On the beer front the pub has six handpumps with Tetley Cask as a permanent feature and then for our visit the other five were Marston’s Pedigree, Great Newsome Sleck Dust, Big Shed Brewery Battlefield Gold, Saltaire Raspberry Blonde and a really excellent Saltaire Chocoholic.
The Minerva is a proper pub and long may it remain so.

Old Boots left this review about The Minerva

A triangular or possibly ship shaped pub with two main rooms sharing a central servery, the landwardside room is served by an hatch, this room is more dining oriented. There are a couple of smaller rooms in the "bow", one is claimed to be the smallest room in any pub. Six pulls serve beers from smaller breweries and Banks's. The pub sits on the Humber riverside at the end of one of the old docks, now a marina and just outside is a magnificent public toilet. The Deep is at the end of the road across the River Hull. Comfortable and welcoming it has most of what a good pub should have.
