Backstreet local deep in a residential area above the town centre. Currently closed with a large "For Sale" notice displayed.

This is a two roomed pub hidden away from the town and looking at the locally closed casualty numbers, doing well to remain so. The bar is ahead in the larger main room, mostly standard seating in here, lower walls panelled, interesting tubular pattern obscure glass to the lower windows. The Tv in here was showing 6 Nations rugby ,other decor included a large Charrington's mirror, thoughtlessly partially hidden by a quiz machine. A dartboard in usable condition to the side of the bar, ceiling beams are covered in banknotes one side, regulars' photos the other. The smaller side room looks like an old granny's parlour with the fireplace centre stage, clocks, lamps, vases and an old Carling Black Label font top on here, all the fire making tools below, plus oddly a few Darth Vader figures. There is evidence of a pub cat in here, with a food bowl present, but no sign of the feline unfortunately. Books and games on shelves in here too. A pinboard has information plus regular's postcards. There is a hatch to the bar.
As to the beer, three handpumps, St Austell Tribute, Brains SA and Brains Bread of Heaven. A sign states Brain's beers all at £3.00 and Super Sunday has £1 off all pints from 7:30 till closing. Fill yer boots.

Roger Button left this review about The Castle

A bit out of the way in a residential back street, the Castle could be so much better than it is with a bit of attention.

The interior consists of smallish, carpeted L-shaped main bar and a separate side room with a service hatch to the main bar. The décor throughout the pub is a bit faded and tired whilst the pub in general is very scruffy and untidy. The Whisky bottle boxes overv the bar attract attention but theap posters, pictures and football inspired England flag give the place a bit of a run down feel and electrical gear was piled up in one corner. To the right of the bar is a darts area and there are decent flat screen TV’s in both rooms (Sky & ESPN both shown).

The rear beer garden if also rather unkempt and could easily be made so much more inviting with a bit of effort

Two ales available on my Saturday lunchtime visit - Everards Tiger and Toad Tadpole being the options. Unfortunately the Tadpole I tried was quite poor quality and at £3.20 for a 3.8% pint, a bit overpriced for a residential back street pub. There was a small selection of basic pub meals advertised at around £5-6.

This was probably the poorest pub I visited out of the 9 on my trek around town which is a shame because the potential is certainly there. The unusual beer choices suggest that the landlord isn’t content to go with safe options but there is a real need to focus on quality of the ales and the pub itself if the place is to have any impact or draw any worthwhile praise.
