A pleasant Nicholson’s pub on the popular Rose Street strip, it’s a lot smaller than many of their outlets and felt all together a lot more comfortable and relaxed than is often the case with their larger establishments.
It’s a single room pub internally split over a couple of different levels with two or three steps between each. There is also an upstairs restaurant area, although this was not open when we visited. Décor wise it’s quite traditional, with wooden boards on the majority of the floor along with some attractive flagstone style tiling down the right hand side, dark green wood panelling on much of the walls with white wood panelling above and a low, whitewashed ceiling, although it’s a bit of shame that the old beams had also been painted over. A few brewery mirrors were on the wall, as well as a couple of interesting historical notes, some old pictures from the locale and a number of old McVities adverts who were originally based in the street. A TV showing a news channel was up in one corner, but the volume was off so this was not too intrusive.
The menu offered a decent choice of “pub grub” dishes such as fish & chips, sausage & mash, steak & chips, and so on as well as a number of pies and burgers. My Chicken, Ham Hock & Cheese Pie was very tasty and a generous portion and quite good value at £10.75 I thought, although do check your bill as I was initially over charged.
Beers on tap were their own Pale Ale, Deuchar’s IPA and Siren Broken Dream along with Jack Back and 80/- from the Stewart Brewery. The solitary cider meanwhile was Mortimer’s Orchard.

What have they done to this pub ripped all the inside out and made it into a plastic S--t house why do they do this to our old lovely pubs

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Rose Street Brewery
Split-level bar with upstairs restaurant (not visited), but the brewery is long gone. Traditional furniture and decor of the sort that many of the Rose Street tourists would probably expect to see. Three of four handpumps working, with Rocking Rudolph, Deuchars IPA and Caledonian 80/- (£2.90, less 20p Camra discount advertised although barman had no idea what this was or how to process it on the till).

A pub living on its past reputation. When I lived in Edinburgh in the 90's this was actually a brewery pub and served 2 beers called Auld Reekie 80/- & 90/-. It hasn't brewed for years but is still clinging on to the name. They also used to have some good artists on who were aimed at the locals as much as the tourists. These days it's a bit shabby, with tacky tartan all around and certainly needs a refurb, as did some of the clientele on the night we called in. There were 3 handpumps on the bar serving changing guests. The pint I had was very average and the barman was more interested in trying to be a DJ rather than serving. I can't complain about him playing Jeff Buckley though so he gets a point for that. There are loads of better places even on Rose Street now and we won't be calling in again any time soon.

Considering it's in a tourist area, the Rose Street Brewery has managed to keep its character as a proper pub catering for passers-by and locals alike. It's a two-storey pub with the upstairs concentrating on food and the downstairs a drinkers' bar. Food was cheap and edible, the staff were friendly enough and the clientele civilised. There were 3 ales on; I had the Hooston Honey Bunny which was quite drinkable although not first class. Happy to come back and would recommend including this pub in a crawl.

The first night we were in Edinburgh we ended up eating at the Rose Street Brewery because it was one recommended by our B&B host. The second night we couldn't find the tapa bar we had seen the night before so we ended up at Rose Street Brewery again to eat. The hostess recognized us and welcomed us. After traveling around Scotland for nine days we got back to Edinburgh and since it was a Sunday and eating places closed earlier, we chose to eat here again. Each time we were made to feel welcome. The food was very good and there was a variety of items on the menu to choose. I highly recommend this place to eat.
