Roger Button left this review about Admirals

I popped into Admirals for a quick pint having taken advantage of the late evening light and walked along the cliffs from nearby Portknockie. The pub is situated on the edge of the pretty fishing harbour and appears to have once been 2 cottages that have been converted into a pub although the characteristics of the individual buildings remain intact.

The main bar is on the right hand side and has a typical harbour pub feel with bare floors, lanterns, pots and pans hangling from the beams and various nautical instruments in keeping with the pub’s location. The furnishings included old fashioned dimpled top metal tables and a few built in leather seats. One corner at the front houses a flat screen TV and at the far end is a pool table. To the side is a conservatory add on which seemed to be quite spacious and airy although it wasn’t in use during my visit. I didn’t get much of a look at the lounge bar either but it I think I spotted an aquarium amongb the general furnishings.

The pubs in this area do not generally warm to strangers and whilst Admiral’s did not come across as unfriendly or intimidating, it was also not particularly welcoming and I did feel a bit uneasy being a lone Englishman wandering in late at night though it may just have been my own precautious nature.

One thing that the pub did fall short on was beers with just standard keg bitter, lager and the like although to be fair, this was a selection that is no better or worse than most of the pubs in the neighbouring villages. I didn’t really stay long enough to get a real feel for the place but it was neat and tidy and about par for the area. It would certainly meet your basic requirements if you are staying nearby or just visiting the village but I wouldn’t particularly venture off the beaten track to visit it.
