This was planned as my last pub - appropriately - of a trip around Newport and outskirts, for the good reason that my bus to Telford had a stop opposite the pub. My walk from the penultimate pub suffered from inattention to the map on my part, resulting in arriving nearly an hour late and having missed one bus, with another due in three minutes. So I had enough time to decide which beer from three I was going to neck quickly: Butcombe Gold, Marstons 61 Deep, or a beer badged as Last Inn Ale which I was told was a 3.4% pale brewed by Marstons. Having the beer poured and paying for it took another 40 seconds, so I had about 20 seconds left to drink my half of Last Inn Ale and cross the road (carefully). The bus was 90 seconds late: I could have had a pint.

Previously known as the Last Inn , the Aston calls itself a Country Dining Pub , there are two entrances both to the side of the pub , one marked Bar the other Restuarant , they both lead to the same room , the bar door takes you into the bottom half of the pub with low beams and an open fire , steps lead up to the restuarant area in what is basically one L shaped room , for a dining pub it came as a suprise that the kitchen is closed in the afternoons (open again at 5.30).
There is a decent selection on beer on with Hoegarden and Peroni on draught and a good selection of cask ale , Pedigree , Wye Valley Golden Ale , Wood Shropshire Lad and Three Tun XXX , The Golden Ale was very good .
Service was pretty good .
Its not a bad pub this

BE WARNED. This pub does not serve food on a Monday. We wasted money on 2 taxis to have a belated Valentine's celebration there only to find out after being there an hour, and ONLY because the landlord told 3 other ladies who had come in to eat. Also, take some earplugs as if it is the landlords dinner time the TV will be turned up loud so he can watch the news. I am genuinly upset as we were really looking forward to the night out as The Last Inn has been our "special occasion" pub for years. So when I read the other reviews we decided to return and were left bitterly disappointed. We'll try again but will make sure we drive and make sure we're not celebrating anything.

The Last Inn changed hands in October 2008 and what a difference. Our family has eaten here twice since the new owners have taken over. Food is fantastic, great choice for the family and excellent value for money. Read the previous review and feel duty bound to inform the general public that the previous owners did not deserve to run such a great hostelry.

The landlord and landlady are a credit, they are working extremely hard and don't deserve someones past reputation to tarnish their business.

I wish more public houses put in as much effort to make a family feel welcome.
