A Victorian town pub on what used to be the main road, it is now a friendly local which puts the needs of its regulars before the tourist trade. There are no frills – it’s basic, functional and unpretentious. There is a ‘hidden’ garden at the back (though as it is sign-posted, it’s nto hidden very well), but there is only on-street parking which can get tight. Four original rooms now form the drinking area, not quite open plan but relatively discrete. The smoking area is at the back of the pub between the building and the garden. The flooring is old woodblock. There is a large screen and projector, a jukebox which was thankfully switched off, table skittles and a dartboard. Two ales on, Butcombes and Wadworth’s Horizon. Both beers were OK but probably on the way out. I’d be very happy to drop in for a pint again when passing.
