Old Boots left this review about The Sun Hotel

Classic, flat iron shaped, large pub, obviously an important venue in its Victorian heyday now sunk to a mediocre town centre pub. A smaller than expected triangular room with an L shaped counter, mostly done out in shades of grey woodwork, there’s a nice old marble fireplace. Seating is mainly banquettes at rectangular wooden tables although there’s some half height posing tables. Beerwise just a sad collection of the usual suspects.

The Sun Hotel is a large pub that is opposite the Sir Norman Rae Wetherspoons, ironically this pub was run by Wetherspoons until the Sir Norman Rae opened.
Once inside the main bar room is on the left side, this room is L shaped and carpeted, the seating is comfy bench type and a few tall tables and chairs, there is another room up some steps to the right,i did not look into this room, there is also a pool table which is down some steps.
There are no real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Theakston Best which was a pretty poor drink, the other keg bitter was John Smiths smooth crap.
There were two TVs one showing sky sports football previews, the other horse racing previews.
Quiet background music was playing.
The pub was quite busy on my pre 11am visit.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Sun Hotel

Impressive old inn in a prominent position, but looks deceive unfortunately... Refurbished split-level interior, with a pool room and a small seating area below. Main entrance and bar area up one storey. Loud disco late Friday evening, with some rather 'lively' customers making life a bit difficult for others. One disused handpump on the counter, but the barmaid saw where I was looking and helpfully pointed to the keg Theakston's Best (£2.20) which was probably the best beer on offer.

Bucking Fastard left this review about The Sun Hotel

A ground floor bar in a triangular shaped building facing a busy road junction. The bar is directly infront of the side entrance, and the solitory handpump didn't appear to have been used for a while, I ordered a keg Theakstons only to be told that John Smith's smooth was the only beer available. At least it was cheap and wet.
There is a flat screen close to the bar and the locals gather around this areea but beyond a pillar there is a more discreet area with a banquette,a couple of tables and a ballustrade looking over the descent to the lavs.
A local pub for local people,it has done well to survive given it's proximity to the 'spoons opposite, and the boisterous clientele may well have not made the grade over the road.

Town centre pub situated in a prime position, with a few early morning local characters, and beer at a reasonable price.

A bit of a mixed experience with this place. Always have one or two real ales on and fair enough venue but can attract a certain type of punter who insists on coughing all over you or trying to nick your lunch.
