aleand hearty left this review about The Flatt Top

The Flatt Top is a slightly imposing stone-built pub, positioned on a right-angled bend in the road and atop a steep sided slope, overlooking acres of farmland, below. Dating from 1858, it’s a traditional two-roomer, offering few surprises on the decor and fittings front, apart from the bar which is unusually angled in the corner.

Slightly disappointingly, the ale choice was limited to Tetley Bitter, or Abbeydale Moonshine, on our visit. As someone who hasn’t drunk Tetley’s for years, particularly since the Leeds brewery was closed, Moonshine it had to be. Having said that, I’m a fan of Abbeydale beers and it was in pretty good nick, hovering between NBSS 3-3.5 and very reasonably priced at £3.40 a pint. Also, I’m a firm believer in having one or two beers kept well, rather than half a dozen, only fit for sprinkling on your chips.

Atmosphere wise, it seemed fairly chilled on our Saturday teatime visit, with about a dozen regulars dotted around the room. However, as it was such a warm day we decided to sit on the balcony, to the rear of the pub and enjoy the fine views over towards the National Coal Mining Museum and Emley Moor mast (see photo). Struggling to open the doors, with drinks in hand, one guy held them for me, which I thought was a nice, friendly gesture. Service was initially a little functional and polite, but gradually warmed up as we stayed for several rounds. Surprisingly, in these post(?) Covid times, payment was by cash only.

Overall, it was an enjoyable hour and a half. Realistically, it’s probably a one-off visit, but, if I was in the area once more, I liked the Flatt Top enough to call again. GBG 2022 listed.
