Roger Button left this review about The Wellington

Centrally located, the Wellington is a fairly unassuming place that at first wouldn’t demand more than a cursory glance however what it lacks in aesthetic splendour it more than makes up for in the product department.

The Welly is probably the number one option for ales in Brtains second city with a bank of 16 (I think) hand pumps pumping out a seemingly endless rotation of ales from far and wide. The choice is a little overpowering but assistance is given by way of a constantly updating beer list on a couple of flat screen TV’s within the pub. Due the numbers, it is recommended that you request your beer by pump number rather than name. The prices were pretty reasonable for a City Centre with ales caosting between £2.70 and £3.20 although the general rules of the stronger beers costing more didn’t seem to apply.

The interior is quite plain and unfussy but no-one comes to admire the curtains. The pub does open out towards the back but it can get heavingly busy at peak times as one would expect although this doesn’t seem to worry the pub cat that wanders aimlessly between the tables.

Certainly a must visit for ale fans although if that isn’t your tipple, you may wonder what all the fuss is about.

When visiting Brum, I'll always pop into the Welly. I always enjoy lunchtime, as it is a bit more relaxed to enjoy a sandwich and a pint - a good time to chat to the staff and regulars. The Welly Telly with it's list of beers, 4 regulars and 12 guests, is hard to resist! Love the local beers from Black Country Brewery - well worth a visit here!

Superb well kept pub with various old photos, some of old Birmingham and others of breweries etc. On our Friday night visit, as one of the 16 ales went off, the hand pump wash flushed through and another ale put on. also three ciders on hand pump. A good cross section of people in here mainly drinking the ales. This pub is normally the main reason for us visiting Birmingham. no food here but they have plates and cutlery so you can enjoy your own favourite take away while drinking the superbly kept ales.

I have popped into the Wellington a number of times in the past, had a pint or a half, and moved on. After meeting up with a mate for a few in the Old Joint Stock, I wandered into the Wellington for a half before I toddled home. I remained here for a couple more hours.

I sat at the bar and entered into the banter with the customers and staff and following recommendations, sampled a few beers I hadn't tried before. I can't remember them now as I got fairly sozzled. I have to say, I was made to feel welcome by a bunch of people I had never met before. I had a great time.

Oh, and the dartboard was in use when I got there. Most definitely not just for show.

Before the smoking ban it was evil and disgusting, now it's excellent for real ales.
(If you're a wine or cider drinker to the JDW pub on the same street for a better and cheaper range)

Often standing room only on fri/sat night.

Traditional style, albeit quite a posh one, with wallpaper, tongue and groove, carpet and a genuine hatstand. There is a dart board but it looks more for effect than practical use, the barback is pretty splendid too and even has a handpump. I love the beer screen which replaces the traditional blackboard, even so people still check out the pump clips. Needless to say the beer was excellent and I think everything was £3 a pint including draught Worthington E **&? Early evening when I was in so it was a bit quiet but there were still bar-blockers in action. Mixed ages of customers 20-70 and a few very odd hair styles in evidence. A proper pub and real ale destination.

Enjoyable visit on 17th and managed to get to the bar OK. Had 3 new beers from the superb list from Moles, Morgans and Brew Co breweies. First class. Sad to have missed a green beer from Slaters called The Craic.

I simply call it as "The Greatest". Almost in my every visit to Brum, I always go to Wellys and PROPER real ale pub. No well known brands like Carling, John Smiths, Brew XI do ever sell, only real ales that is it. 15/16 real ales on ale, if you have problem choosing the beer and Television above the bar will help you. Resident Cat sometimes makes an appearance and will sleep on stool. No food served BUT you can bring your own, cutlery will provided. You can visit Old Joint Stock via Welly's back door.
