A pleasant surprise in what could be an unexceptional suburban pub. The interior has a tidy, spacious feel, probably from the clear wooden floor and plain furniture. A roaring logburner on each side of the room is welcome on a winter's day, while a nice homely touch is given by vases of fresh flowers sprinkled around the bar. Three large screens keep the locals amused with sports, although no-one seemed much interested as the 1.40 from Chepstow wound its course. To one side is a proper dartboard set-up, as opposed to the many hidden behind dining tables found elsewhere. Garden at rear, as well as a few pavement tables. Draught ales at time of visit were Hogs Back TEA, Dark Star Hophead, Harvey's Best and Doom Bar. One of those pubs that just feels nicely run and welcoming.

Still one of the best ale pubs in and around Croydon, but beer quality has been up and down in recent months. Hophead was replaced by Fyne Ales Jarl for a while, which was a great move as Hophead can be found in a number of other Croydon pubs. Other recurring beers recently include Palace Ale and Greene King London Glory. There is a settled group of bar staff and regulars, all of whom are very welcoming - if the beer quality was a little more reliable I'd be in here all the time.

Tucked away on the outskirts of Croydon, this is one of the borough's essential real-ale destinations.
First impressions suggest that this is another run of the mill working man's pub, full of lager drinkers and in need of a good lick of paint. However, the bar reveals six hand pumps, with Dark Star Hophead and Harvey's Best complimented by various guests, always in top condition. A healthy selection of pump clips are displayed in the smaller seating area behind the bar, demonstrating the excellent rotation policy.
The staff are very friendly and always looking to make your stay more enjoyable. There are a good bunch of regulars ensuring a lively atmosphere, be it at the bar, on one of the two dartboards or in front of one of the three log fires.
There's a decent pub menu if you're looking for a bite to eat and they hold a beer festival every few months as well as organising trips to local breweries. Well worth making the journey out of town for.

This is a down to earth old school pub with no real frills apart from it sells an excellent range of good real beer. It is a large square single room with the bar occupying the middle of the back wall, carpeted, some wood panelling and a painted wooden fake beamed ceiling. Seating is traditional at standard tables, decor includes a few sporting prints, cricket and rugby related, an interesting old map of London by Crutchley, and a whole load of Crystal Palace FC stuff. If you miss the pennants, branded dartboard, P4 LAC numberplate on display then you may be jogged into realising by the Palace branded glasses and named beer.
No matter, despite my non affiliation to the club I received good and friendly service from the barmaid and was immediately involved in a bit of banter with a few locals.
There is a good real ale policy here, on my visit there were Fyne Ales Jarl, Great Orme Brewery Celtica, Morrisey's Palace Blond...the official beer of guess who would you reckon?...Old Rosie Cider plus two reversed, one of which was clearly Hophead. All therefore light beers but that suits me in summer.
The food menu took me back a decade or so, cheap and cheerful proper pub food for drinkers, chip butties (£2.50), Jacket spuds, Welsh Rarebit and omelettes.
There are not many of these basic old boozers about anymore but this one survives on good values, great beer and decently priced snacks. Certainly worth walking up from the Claret and also served by the tram at Addiscombe.

After visiting The Claret, strolled up Bingham Road to this pub.Not much to add to the good reviews below, and found ale quality more to my liking with Dark Star Hophead and American Pale Ale on good form.Six real ales is commendable and the service from the barmaids and gov'nor was tip top.An earthy pub with a mix of customers ,the side seating area to the left of the bar is quieter than the main body of the pub infront of the bar.Garden at the rear.A bus ride away from East and West Croydon stations.

An old traditional pub that serves up to 6 changing real ales and all served up by a very keen and friendly guv'nor.A bit rough around the edges but this adds to the atmosphere of the pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Cricketers

Friendly, busy and a bit tatty. Only two of the six handpumps on, due to better-than-expected sales over the Christmas/New Year period (who says there is no demand for real ale?). Nice pint of Westerham Puddledock Porter. A proper pub.
