Large Wetherspoons rambling through a range of buildings with different frontages, strategically located in centre of town. Seemed to have a particularly large range of beers, and lots of staff in evidence, which suggests it could be well run, but otherwise all the usual JDW features. Fair enough. (2013 review)
Update 2018: nothing to change.

My old 1992 Suffolk beer guide reveals that this was a Whitbread house and before that part of the Lacons estate. Wetherspoons took it on in 2013 and I suspect it is unrecognisable from the old pub. Having arrived in the dark I wasn't even sure if it was originally a pub. It's also one of their expanding chain of hotels. Like many of the hotels it's a rambling building with various different areas. Overall this is a much more upmarket sort of place than most Hight Street Spoons. I found myself a seat near the food hatch.
The bar has two sets of six hand pumps hich had the JDW Trio Of Doom with the GK beers doubled up, one available soon, Caledonian Edinburgh Castle, Purity UBU, Ramsgate Gadd's Number 5, Stonehenge Pigswill, Salopian Darwin's Origin and Adnam's Bitter. The one I wanted had just gone so I had a Devils' Backbone to go with the Speical Offer curry I'd ordered.
This one seemed to be a lot better than average JDW.

Very pleasant coaching inn still fulfilling its purpose after hundreds of years. Much changed over time, but retaining some lovely features like the splendid little library. Attracts an older clientele, especially so in the mornings when it seems to cater mainly for ladies of a certain age taking coffee.

Spot on Adnams beers, and the food is good though the restaurant thinks more of itself than maybe it should. Rooms are fine and so makes an excellent spot for a weekend break.
