A recent midweek visit found the pub with no real ale. The friendly landlady explained that there was some available in the cellar, but they didn't put it on until later in the week because otherwise it would tend to go off during the quiet days, leaving nothing for the weekend. She tried to persuade us that Tetleys Smooth Crap was "not too bad" and although we tried a half we weren't convinced, and even the prospect of an imminent cloud burst didn't prevent us making the short journey to the Ring O'Bells for our next pint.

The Sportsman is a decent looking pub that is a short walk from the main road through Swinton.
Once inside the pub had two rooms, the bar was to the right, this was an L shaped room with comfy bench seating and a pool table to the rear, the lounge to the left was smarter and ran to the rear of the pub, this room was carpeted and had comfy bench seating and normal tables and chairs.
There was some some decent music playing and the landlady asked me "if the music was ok" i said i was quite happy listening to it.
There was one real ale on the bar which was kelham Easy Rider, this was a very nice drink.
As i was about to leave there was a live band starting to set up in the lounge.
I quite liked this pub.

This is a modernised 1930s "half-timbered" building. The bar is split into two sides, the one on the right has pool table, dart board and two wide-screen TVs for sports. The tables are high with high benches to match. There was an interesting display of old golfing equipment (gutta percha moulds and the like). The inn sign outside has been changed from the typical sportsman = hunter to a more modern collage of images from football.

It was quite smart inside, well presented and with a friendly atmosphere. There were three hand pumps but only one real ale. This was Fullers London Pride at an astonishingly cheap £2 a pint. It was in good condition too. Probably worth the few minutes' walk from the station if you're after a decent pint (as there's no real ale at The Station).
