I wasn't greeted with the welcome E TA got but there was a small child between the two doors to enter the lounge. Maybe my timing of just after they opened at 3pm rather than the 1.30pm advertised on their website complete with the wrong area dialing code forced me to go on an hour walk to photo the 5 lost pubs in this hilly part of Yeovil.

I quite liked it but I'm not fussed where I go. As no real ale on it's not really going to be a place to head for but for ticking all pubs it's a must.

The white van trades all rolled in after a productive day to watch the gold cup. One person backed the winner so that's him in the pub all night spending the winnings as until it being payday today he'd been short of cash.

When attempting to not walk back to town I found out that one taxi company has it as a banned address but it was fine for me to go and stand outside the nearby shops so maybe some truth in E TA's experience of the place and potential anti-social clientele.

A down-market 1960s estate pub on a busy through-road. A gang of gobby young teenagers blocking the entrance sets the tone, while the gang of gobby smokers – presumably the parents of the teenagers – echoes it at the back door. The air is further disturbed by the over-loud jukebox. The main bar is busy and lively, full of locals enjoying each other's company. The rear games room has all the fun and character of Margate out of season, dominated as it is by a huge screen onto which live football is projected. Romance is alive though, as one rather drunk person did at least get a chair for his female companion, placing it to his side and slightly back so he could ignore her for 90 minutes while not missing the match. There were also a pool table and a selection of gaming machines in the games room. No real ale, the whole pub stinks of stale smoke and there is no welcome for strangers, so I suggest giving this one the bird.

Rough council estate pub - grubby around the edges and mediocre beer. Staff are friendly enough which is more than can be said of the chavvy regulars. Well below average - shame because 30 years ago it was a really good pub with excellent beers and food.
