An 18th Century roadside pub, originally a coaching inn. It’s now a very friendly village local which attarcts only occasional passing trade due to its unobtrusive and unostentatious setting. There is a tight car park which is easily misssed, and a small tidy garden from which smoke blows into the pub when the doors are open. Inside, there is a single long bar, carpeted, with a mix of bar stools and tables. It has a pool table and the pub has a history of darts. There was a projector and screen but these were not being used. There is a separate dining room. The landlord and locals were very welcoming, making us feel at home straight away, though the pub dog looked a bit schizophrenic. The landlord is passionate about his beer quality – one of the handpulls was dispensing Cotleigh Tawny, but he wouldn’t seel it to us as he said the quality wasn’t good enough. Instead there was a choice of Hobgoblin and Doombar. I had the former which was in excellent condition. We didn’t try the Doombar. There was also a pin of cider behind the bar. A excellent traditional no-frills local, does exactly what it says on the pub sign, well worth stopping for a quick one.
