A busy working village pub, away from the tourist trail. Stone built with 18th Century origins, the pub is at one end of the main road through the village. It has a car park which it shares with the village hall, and there is a small, rather dull garden. Inside, the rooms have been made open plan. The main bar area, which has a couple of large convivial tables, is warmed by an inglenook fireplace, and there is a smaller, quieter area off to one side with a couple of dining tables. The staff were very helpful, the locals a bit strange but reasonably friendly. The pub hosts a lot of village activity, including the local folk group who sit around playing Purcell numbers on hurdy-gurdies and guitars, knitting their own yoghurt and being all nostalgic about the loss of traditional country skills, like weaving, quantity surveying and systems analysis. Dogs are very much welcome, and the atmosphere is pleasant. Food was rather a disappointment, coming as it did from a packet rather than fresh ingredients. The beer, however, was excellent, fully vindicating the GBG entry – Plain Ales's Sheep Dip, Tribute and Doombar, all in first-class condition, plus Old Rosie on draft. I shall certainly return for the beer and banter, but I shall eat somewhere else next time.

Very nice traditional country village pub - beams, horse brasses, etc. you know the sort of thing - with two small bar areas (filled with locals), bar dining area and separate dining room. Warm welcome even though we arrived just before the kitchen closed. Beers on offer were Black Sheep Ale (Yorkshire Ales) which was very good indeed, Cotleigh Barn Owl and Palmers Copper Ale. The fourth, Butcombe, had the clip turned round. On the downside, as far as my wife was concerned, was that only three white wines were on offer and the one she chose was very warm. The food was plentiful and very tasty (although my scampi had obviously been cooked in oil used to cook something else, giving the scampi a strange taste). All in all above average and very good value for money - 2 pints, 2 large wines and 2 meals for just £32. Only criticism was the smell of smoke wafting through from wherever the smokers are relegated to these days - it just wasn't far enough away.

A village pub with the weight of Enterprise Inns behind in, hence the limited range of Bass and er, Bass. 3 other hand pulls were off. Guess these are used for busier periods. Nervertheless the Bass was good and service good as well. Lovely warm interior with open fire, low wooden beamed ceilings. We do need to give these Pubco pubs a break as they are dealt a poor hand by the likes of Enterprise.

In on Sunday for charity fun day. Wasn't as good as last year didn't have as many stalls set up in the garden. Had Wickwar Bob and Cottage King Arthur which were both average. Didn't try food as there was a dodgy looking roast pork / burger van in the car park.
