A fair sized pub which retains two separate rooms divided by the bar. The vault or public bar is part tiled/part carpeted and has a pool table, dartboard and a TV. The smarter lounge side is carpeted, has a raised area at one end, a brick fireplace and overlooks the canal. Outdoor picnic benches also look onto the canal lock. Various events were advertised such as karaoke, a disco, reggae night, a beer raffle and so on, so the pub appears to have a community focus.
Two handpumps in each room although the vault pair were unclipped. Doom Bar and Lymestone Stone Faced however I was advised that the Lymestone wasn't ready so it had to be a quick half of Doom Bar. I didn't see any indications of food but I cannot be certain.

The Blue Bell doesnt open at lunchtime Mon-Thur so we popped in the Canal Tavern after working up Heartbreak Hill. There was a pump clip for Brakespear Honey Bee but the landlord explained that the barrel hadnt settled which was honest enough.Had a swift Stella instead but no reason to stay any longer. No sign of lunchtime food and the pub was very quiet.Publican missing a trick at lunchtime when a lot of boats pass by ,and with the Blue Bell not open.Pub seemed clean and no problem with locals.

Alan Winfield left this review about The Canal Tavern

The Canal Tavern is as the name says next to a canal and the pub looked decent enough from the outside.
Once inside the pub seemed fairly basic but was clean and tidy but there were no real ales on the bar with the only bitter being Worthington smooth so i had a Guinness.
i thought this pub was a bit of a dissapointment.
