My experience matched the previous two reviews. This is indeed a pub which has been knocked about to the extent that no real trace of the original pub remains, suffice to say that it’s actually a conversion in its own right, rather than being a purpose build pub, despite the Hall’s ceramic brewer’s plaque to the side of the entrance. Otherwise, there’s a grey and claret colour scheme with traditional furniture and a carpeted floor; nothing to get to worried about.
However, it comes across as a very friendly place with a charming and engaging barmaid presiding over three pumps drawing Chadlington Oxford Heritage, Vale Fork Handles and White Horse Rider at £2.15 a half and very nice.
This was comfortably the most enjoyable pub visit of my Godstow/Wolvercote quartet.

A molested old pub which has been the victim of various refurbs leaving a fairly unsatisfying mish-mash interior stripped of any real charm – I could just make out the ghostly remnants of the ex-snug to the right of the bar. However, it was a very friendly and down to earth place - everyone said hello as we circulated, such a welcome is really rare south of Birmingham (have since found out that the place is now community-run, which may help explain it?!). To the rear is a darts and pool area, where the over-loud modern music needed turning down a notch (after reading KK’s review below, perhaps they’ve broken the volume knob on the stereo). Quite a large grassed rear garden, which we enjoyed. Three ales on and a decent choice too; Vale Gravitas, Box Steam Indian Summer (good nick) and XT Animal Deer (a little warm). If our experience was indicative of the average, I’d say it’s worth popping in if you like a friendly, no-frills local. 6.5

Next door to the quirky Jacobs Inn this traditional boozer is now pleasingly community-run and still retains some character despite looking like it's been knocked-through a bit over time. An elongated L-shape, the bar faces on entry from t'front with a small seating area to the right. Bar stools against the bar with four locals in Monday night attendance and seating around the periphery until halfway up the L where the room is semi-divided leading onto a bare-boarded games room housing pool table, dartboard and large flatscreen TV for the inevitable live sport. Third-height wood panelling all around with an alternating red / cream paint scheme above. Plenty of flyers advertising forthcoming music nights including an 'Early English Folk Ensemble'. Three beers comprised White Horse Village Idiot, Box Steam Broad Gauge and XT 4. The XT 4 was unfortunately soupy and was replaced with the Box Steam offering which was a bit darker and maltier than I was looking for, but OK nonetheless. I liked this place, but the only bugbear was the overloud and out-of-place muzak: as much as I'd like to see Katy Perry kiss another girl (and enjoy it), I don't want to hear her singing about it in a pub.
