A fine old building (look up and you can see the original name of Skinners Arms carved in stone in 1897). Inside is a jumbo high-ceiling interior over two rooms, public bar to left and lounge to right. Fairly well decorated though the dull dark green paint in the bar is a mis-step, the lounge is the preferable set-down. Cold, to the extent the barmaid had her coat on and neither of the fires were lit. Just the two cask and only clipped in the lounge (why??) with choices of TTL and First & Last Amarillo which was par (NBSS 3). A bit disappointing really, promised more than it delivered given it’s GBG listed.

Will Larter left this review about The Tannery

Situated a five minute walk away from the town centre, the reason being obvious when considering the pub's name (and it was originally called the Skinners Arms): the curing of cattle hides to make leather is a notoriously smelly business. Now a two-roomed pub - and not at all smelly, I hasten to add - but large enough to have been three or more in the past. I went in the room to the right, which also has a corner door that was not open at the time of my visit, but looks like it could be if the weather were warmer. The bar here, back to back with its equivalent on the left, has four hand pumps with two beers from local First & Last brewery, plus Wainwright. F&L Reiver was a very good bitter. The atmosphere, early mid-week afternoon, was congenial, and helped by a couple of displays of "new baby" photos and cards, indicative of a pub that makes a community contribution. A real locals pub.

Aqualung . left this review about The Tannery

This place has clearly changed completely since the previous review. The two separate bars have been retained, the public one having beers and the lounge ciders but obviously any drink can be ordered from either bar. I didn't get to look at the lounge bar but the other side has wooden floors and has been done up in the current favoured style.
Lots of ciders are available but just six beers which were Hammerton N1, Sonnet 43 Seraphim, Hop Studio Pale, Anarchy Sublime Chaos, Allendale GFPA and Consett White Hot. I went for the Anarchy beer and the Hammerton N1 both of which were excellent. I think they were £3.10 with the CAMRA discount but the weaker N1 may have been cheaper.

Real Ale Ray left this review about Skinners Arms

A large traditional pub, 10 minute walk from the town centre. Has a quiz night on sundays, also serves food. Two ales on Marstons Pedigree and Timothy Taylor Landlord. Will call again.
