Blackthorn _ left this review about Wooden Walls Of Old England

An attractive thatched pub in this small village just a couple of minutes from the junction of the M1, it consists of a bar, dining room, snug and a good sized beer garden at the rear.

The bar to the right is a fairly small room with a corner bar counter and a slightly rough and ready feel. Room is limited here and it was quite busy with a crowd of locals on a recent Tuesday evening visit. A wood burning stove was in a fire-place to one side, whilst the bar was illuminated with an unusual shade of blue LED strip lighting which created an interesting effect but may have become tiresome after a while. Next to this was a small snug with old pictures on the wall and a Northamptonshire skittles game.

The larger room on the left is much more of a restaurant and this was a pleasant carpeted room with some exposed timberwork and an old stone wall partition dividing it in to two. The modern dining chairs gave it something of a contemporary feel and there was an old fire-place off to one side. At this time of year it was filled with some foliage, but whether it’s pressed in to service in the colder weather I’m not sure.

The menu was a step or two up from your usual “pub grub” with the cheapest option, a broad been risotto, coming in at £12. Most of the other dishes were nearer £15 and besides the usual pub stables such as Gammon, Egg & Chips or Fish & Chips, also included a few more adventurous dishes. My Chicken stuffed with Sun-dried Tomato and Mozzarella on a bed of Olive Mash and Mediterranean Vegetables was a decent and tasty dish, and despite it’s slightly steep price tag it was very pleasant and generous portion, so I have no complaints, although if I were being critical I would say that neither the sun-dried tomato or the mozzarella were particularly noticeable. There are also deals on a couple of nights, such as Tuesday steak night where two steaks and a drink can be had for £30.

Beers on tap were Wychwood Pile Driver and Jennings Cumberland. The solitary cider was Stowford Press which makes a pleasant change from the usual dross around these parts.
