The Nelson is perfectly located for a relaxing pint on a sunny day. It sits next to a lock on the canal in Braunston with fields on either side and there is plenty of outside seating both beside the lock itself and along the canal. The building is traditional canalside but the interior, which has recently had some attention, is curiously lacking in charm despite some original features such as beams and fireplaces. It almost feels grubby, much of which is due to a light, soiled, tiled floor circa 1980's I'd guess. Three real ales are on: Hook Norton Old Hooky, Spitfire and an excellent pint of Summer Lightening which makes a visit worthwhile alone. Food is offered but is standard pub fare which didn't look enticing and reports aren't favourable although we didn't eat. Definitely worth a visit on a fine day when you can enjoy a quality pint, pleasant scenery and a spot of gongoozling all at once.
UPDATE - September 2011
A flying visit found the Nelson under new management but with the only change being two new benches by the lockside and a new range of beer: Black Sheep, Tiger and Brains were offered. It is always possible to moor in the pound in between the 2nd and 3rd Braunston locks with the 3rd lock being where the pub sits so access is very easy if boating.

Well The Nelson has really got its act together. Outside is much tidier with many new tables overlooking the lock and the canal while inside has a new wooden floor, new carpets and new furniture in the sofa and easy chair style around the bar area and pine tables and chairs in the restaurant area to the left as you enter.
Service is now friendly and helpful and there's a new, shortened, menu which we indulged in and was excellent and well served. It's decent pub grub so don't come looking for gourmet but it is well done.
Ale has improved as well since my last visit with three handpumps offering the excellent Summer Lightening, Hooky and one other which escapes me.
No problems with mooring either above or below lock 3 which is next to the pub and that's exactly what I'd advise as it allows more Summer Lightening quaffing time.

Visited on Friday 16th September 2011, (between 18.50-20.30) For a Friday night it seemed very quiet, a few locals but mainly small groups of boaters getting a meal before they went back to their narrow boats.
Served by a nice young man who even served the beer in the appropriate glasses, and he later asked if our pints of London Pride had been ok as a new barrel. Round of 2 pints of LP and Newcastle was £9.50. They also had Spitfire on hand pumps.
It does have an old country feel with nothing matching, old styled bar stools, chairs and tables. Looked freshly painted, but not much on the decor front, no pictures of interest etc. However they did have an old pub skittles table in place that looked well used.
We were a little confused with their Restaurant set up as there didn’t appear to be any difference in the Themed menus. It did seem a little expensive for what it was with Fish & chips at £9.25, but we thoroughly enjoyed our Nelson Aberdeen Burger and Thomas Hardy Tandoori burgers, freshly cooked and a reasonable meal.
For people on canal boats it takes 2 ¾ hours from Napton and although their are areas to moor in-between the lochs it may be better to finish the flight and moor before the tunnel and walk down to the pub.

The Admiral Nelson
Nicely placed by a lock and bridge, the garden has a nice view of the canal. This pub is about a 20 minute walk along the flat towpath (two bridges to cross) from bridge 91 on the grand union. Mooring is alot easier between bridge 91 / and the Braunston marina before climbing up the locks to this pub.
We didn’t stop here, but it appeared to be very busy and serving food.

Well reviewed by Mr Phat ,this place gets my vote for serving well kept Summer Lightning .Great location but the pub interior need some TLC.Warily ordered some food and was told that a lot of the menu items were off,so went for a steak on the basis that it's difficult to foul up and I was rewarded with a well cooked medium rare as ordered for £11.Right by the canal , yet more popular with locals than boaters which sadly is quite standard these days on the canal system.
