July 2021
Now back to 4+3 pulls, it now has grey not green decor, there’s a pull down telly screen for bigger sporting occasions and it has dodgy tea lights in empty Fever-Tree cans on each table. There are German & Belgian bottled beers in a beer fridge by the fire, German kegs from ABK, and house lager called Rat Lager from somewhere. There are more paintings and photos as décor than before, including a big portrait of Lord Nelson but before he lost his eye so not in keeping with the implied joke in the pub’s name.
2020
Reopened in August 2020 following a lockdown refurbishment and with a new management team. Fresh paintwork and revamped furniture make it a bit brighter inside, the layout remains as before although with less furniture which might just be down to social distancing guidelines. Six cask beers on offer plus the usual suspect kegs. Time will tell if it will regain its previous reputation for good quality cask beers and its position as the No 1 pub for real ale in Ripon.

Yes if your into real ale this is the place in Ripon lot to pick from young girl behind the bar very chatty but could get on your nerves if it was not busy but a must for you real ale drinkers.

This really is a top quality boozer. Traditional interior, without being shabby, busy outside area, warm welcome and great atmosphere. Most importantly of all the beer is superb. Seven real ales on across a variety of strengths and styles including Hopback Summer Lightning, Roosters Yankee, Black Sheep and Saltaire Triple Chocoholic. We virtually worked our way through the list between us and didn't encounter anything that wasn't good. Even the 'experiments' slipped down very well. Ripon is a lovely town and the One-Eyed Rat adds significantly to its' allure.

Extremely good real ale pub,easily the best in town.There is a wide selection of rotating ales available with a good choice of beer styles.After meeting up with oldboots ,five of us sampled most of the range and every pint was on top form.The pub was busy on a Tuesday evening which is a testament in itself,and the long narrow interior retains traditional pub features and atmosphere.There is a popular garden at the rear of the premises.A must visit if in this historic town ,well worth settling in for a session given the good choice available.

Easily the best pub in Ripon, indeed probably the best pub for many miles. Narrow but deep building, formerly called the Lord Nelson - geddit? Generally friendly, wide range of well kept beers, no food,TV or jukebox. Varied clientele, children and dogs seem to be welcome. On the down side it doesn't open till 5 except Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
