Closed for a refurbishment at the end of the year but there are reports of little having happened and of steel sheeting going up over the windows this week. It is currently on the Star Pubs website seeking a new tenant.

Mr Phat has hit the nail on the head. An all pervading atmosphere of a business in terminal decline and a pub in need of revitalisation. The large restaurant was closed ,apparently awaiting a private function but this appeared a lame excuse, while the large garden which extends down to the canal is a major feature but totally unloved.A clear yet tangy Bombardier only confirmed the pub's first impression. The pub building itself is a 1930's roadhouse and large enough to attract a new owner with investment funds, which is probably the only salvation sad to say.

Approached from the adjacent canal, through the the garden, there's an air of an unloved caravan park in winter with the garden unkempt and strewn with summer detritus and a view of an empty, glass walled restaurant at the back of the pub. We weren't sure whether or not the place was open. The front isn't much better and you enter into a wide, open bar area with a pool table on the right and assorted soft furnishings.
The pub was all but empty on our visit but there were two other customers who demonstrated belching and swearing with considerable prowess which livened up the lunchtime.
We didn't eat and I'm not even sure if food was being offered.
Beer: 1 handpump with the dreaded Bombardier meant a couple of pints of Guiness which was pretty good.
I'd only re-visit if very thirsty and left with absolutely no choice.
