Will Larter left this review about Anchor & Hope

This pub has had the misfortune to have been painted black, a dreadful failure of taste compounded by the fact that it must have been a strikingly unusual but good-looking building with a golden dome atop an apparently purposeless turret. Now it's just a black pub. Inside there's a large room with a bar featuring a number of keg fonts and just two hand pumps hidden away in a corner. The London Pride was running dry as I waited to be served, so we were left with the undistinguished but drinkable house bitter, of unknown provenance. We settled in the small lounge at the far right hand side of the building, the pièce de résistance of this pub, which has beautiful high-quality wood panelling and on the far wall a series of three mirrors with elaborate gold-painted frames

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Anchor & Hope

Thames-side pub, somewhat off the beaten track, and with river views that are perhaps best appreciated from the front patio at night-time with the multi-coloured lights on features such as the O2, Emirates Air Line and Thames Barrier. Pleasantly traditional in the 'L'-shaped bar with a small stage in one corner (being used by a singer with backing tracks late on a Sunday afternoon). By contrast, very modern furniture in the Steven Bennett Saloon to one side (which also features an array of nautical pictures). The good news - beer-wise - is that the two handpumps are back in use, albeit with Greene King IPA and the 'house' (no doubt re-badged GK) Best Bitter (£3.90) being the choice. Still, it was all rather better than I was expecting.

The Anchor & Hope is a bit off the beaten track but, given the poor standard of pubs in the area, is worth the extra effort to seek out. The riverside location is its strongest selling point and there is a good sized patio with benches and purpose built BBQ right next to the river albeit the Thames views aren’t quite sufficient to attract too many of the worlds great landscape artists.

The L-shaped Brewery Tudor interior is quite small and divided into a main bar and, through an arch in what was probably an old pool room, a small dining area. The pub has a predominant nautical theme with boat pictures, model ships, maps of the Thames, bridge equipment (wheels, telegraphs etc) and even pillars that look like old ship masts. A row of mini flat screens are positioned above the bar canopy alongside a Charlton Athletic crest.

The pub generally attracts a no-nonsenese customer base but for all its charm it is let down by having no Real Ales. There used to be 2 hand pumps (“no call for Real Ales” was the response when I queried their removal some time ago) so it's just mainstream Lagers / Kegs / Cider. They once had the most impressive snack selection I have ever come across but this too has now disappeared.

As the pub is only known to locals and more adventurous Charlton fans, it doesn’t get as packed as some of the other pubs in the area on match days. Occasionally, local resident and Charlton fan Glen Tilbrook of Squeeze fame will play gigs here at short notice, usually solo but on occasions with Squeeze or other special guests.

The pub certainly has potential but the lack of even a token Real Ale knocks it down more than anything. If you can work around that particular omission, it really is a half decent lttle place.
