Real Ale Ray left this review about The Ship

This pub is locally known as the "Bloodtub" thanks to the managers info. There's one or two anecdotes, firstly that two groups of rival narrowboat workers would end up brawling with one another and the then landlady, would ask them to clean themselves up and wash the blood off, in a tub of water outside before entering the pub. The second one was that local farmers would barter pigs blood for producing black pudding in exchange for beer.
The interior is typical Country pub with lots of bench seating, open fires etc. The pub is long and narrow and has a multiple choice of seating. The staff were all friendly and chatty. There was a mix of drinkers and diners on my visit. Five ales on handpump, Old School Brewery Detention, Wainwright Gold, Moorhouse's Pendle Witches Brew and Ship Special, their fifth choice was Tatton Brewery Winter Pale. I tried a good few of these and prices were £4 a pint for each beer.

a lovely idyllic location on a lock on the Leeds-Liverpool canal. You can kind of sense how this was once a much more characterful olde worlde place but any rough or wonky edges have been largely smoothed off over the years into a standard country gastropub. there’s a friendly drinkers bar with a long dining room and attached ‘boot room’ (dog friendly). Six real ales on at £3.30 each which were a decent selection though lacking a dark beer for my taste. Nice staff and look out for the charming Australian barmaid who can talk to anyone for hours !

In a charming location backing onto the locks at the beginning of the Rufford Arm of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, this food orientated pub was once a series of cottages.Infact two of the interior dining areas beyond the bar are called Middle Cottage and End Cottage. The entrance is in the middle of the terrace and leads directly to the bar, which is compact but surrounded by a high table and a banquette with tables and chairs where you can sit and drink. There were six handpumps serving GK IPA,Lancaster Blonde,Black Sheep,Prospect Nutty Slack,Moorhouse's Ship Special and an excellent single hopped George Wright's Lubelski 41,(£2.85).A beer bat of three thirds can be had for £3 .There is also an impressive list of single malts.
Through an archway is another small drinking area with seating and it's own counter, while the rest of the pub is given over to dining tables.
The slate flooring, low ceiling and traditional feel makes this a comfortable place to drink, but I would suggest getting here early if you want to dine, there was a veritable rush on a wet Tuesday luchtime at 12.15pm.The menu is full of pub staples, mains generally around £9, sandwiches and chips £6.50 and breakfasts are served at weekends.
Given the location,I would pay a return visit when hopefully the ale range will retain choices beyond the usual, dull national cask ale brands.

Very busy, trendy pub with a large assortment of cask beers. Usually crowded with students. Do food. I've known friendlier bar staff. Seems to be coming a victim of its own success.
