Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Malt Shovel

Attractive old place, and the 'country pub in the town' narrative isn't too wide of the mark. It retains two separate bars, with the lounge on the left-hand side side extending back in several seating / dining areas with the beer garden beyond. All furnished and decorated in the upmarket, semi-traditional style that you would expect from the previous Youngs ownership. The 'Original' (aka 'Ordinary') proved to be 'end of the barrel' but was replaced with good grace with a Tribute (£4.40). Special and London Pride were the other cask ales available from the bank of four handpumps on each counter.

The Malt Shovel is a really nice looking pub that is just off East Hill.
Once inside there is a long oblong shaped room to the left which runs to the rear, the room is bare boarded and there is comfy bench seating and chairs, there is a smaller room to the front right which comfortable.
The pub is a Youngs tied house, there were four real ales on,i had a drink of Youngs Bitter which was a nice drink, the other beers were Youngs Special,St Austell Tribute and one more i failed to read my notes of.
I thought this was a very pleasant pub to have a drink in.

We received a very friendly and genuine welcome in here, the pub retains the old two bar format requiring individual entrance from the street. the larger side bar has an open conservatory to the rear, leading to an outdoor terrace giving good elevated views over the town and Darent valley. The pub is traditional in every sense, with none of the modern foibles in seating, golf and cribbage societies are evident with numerous trophies and shields proudly displayed. Young's beers, Ordinary Bitter, Special and Kew (London) Gold on in the larger room, but an enquiry established that St Austell Tribute was also available on the clip in the front bar. Decor consists mainly of old pictures of the area. A good honest pub, well worth a visit.

Roger Button left this review about The Malt Shovel

The Malt Shovel is certainly one of the best of Dartfords numerous pubs. Situated half way up East Hill overlooking the park, the core building is probably about 250 years old but has been extended and modernised without detracting from its old farmhouse style appearance. Thie pub started as a parlour bar and the small front tap room is probably the quaintest drinking spot in Dartford with its low ceiling, old pictures and basic furnishings. The newish plasma screen is the only real concession to the modern age but is so small that it is hardly noticeable. The separate main bar is larger and more spacious but is just as comfortable and civilized with various prints and nick-nacks including a collection of cameras dangling from the ceiling. Beyond this, situated in a modern glass conservatory, is a dining room / restaurant which in turn leads to an attractive 3 tiered beer patio overlooking the park and a real sun trap when circumstances allow. I have never had any problem with the beers – usual range of Young's on offer with an occasional Young's approved guest. The pub is aimed at the mature sensible drinker / diner and is generally off limits to the moronic element that can be found patronizing the newer pubs in the town centre, a short walk down the hill. Well worth a visit if in the area.
