A very sttractive and something of a landmark pub in a cut-off part of the island, gradually losing out to the crumbling cliffs. The sea of sponsored umbrellas in the beer garden gave the clue that it might be a bit commercialised, and it proved to be almost entirely given over to dining, with table service. The interior is still rather nice, with lots of beams, bricks and stonework, and rather more tastefully presented than most eating houses. The side building appears to be an overflow area and function room. A row of handpumps offered Yates Islander, Butcombe Original and a house brew from somewhere local.

The nearest pub to St Catherine’s lighthouse (which is well-worth a tour). This place looks picturesque from the outside, sat in an elevated position amongst woodland with a lovely front garden affording nice views across the Channel. Less olde worlde inside and has been opened-out and modernised a bit but there are still some decent features like exposed stone walls, aged flagstone flooring and various mounted animal heads. Quite an upmarket feel and was hosting various elderly gentlefolk on our mid-afternoon visit. Four ales on, a fairly mainstream selection for the Isle in Youngs Bitter, Doom Bar, TT Landlord and a Yates-brewed house beer. My Landlord was in good shape. Also sells a cider (Old Rosie). If you’re down this way it’s worth popping in.
