Occupying a prominent position on Hitchin’s central market square this is an attractive historic building of some age that builds hope that a decent characterful pub lurks inside.
However the large banner advertising Sky Sports and outside board detailing cheap drinks offers gives more than a clue of what type of pub this is.
The information plaque outside explains that this is the last of the six inns that used to be around the market square and gives some history of the building. Unfortunately that history has been long swept away internally and it’s a smallish one room space dominated by large flat screens, fruit machines. Dart board and DJ booth for the Karaoke nights and weekend 1am finish DJ sessions.
In saying that it’s a fairly smart clean interior and the bar has lots of shiny standard keg taps on it. No cask ales here and sadly no interesting craft options either despite it being ironically owned by the Craftunion pubco. Worthingtons smooth crap is as good as it gets for the ale drinker here, although it is only £3 a pint at offer times.
The outside tables are quite a nice spot to enjoy an alfresco pint overlooking the market square. Unfortunately enjoy and Worthingtons Smooth is one of life’s oxymorons.

Another of Hitchin's great-looking pubs, with an enviable position on the cobbled Market Square. A laminate, faux-wooded floored rectangular room with a bar against its right-hand wall, there's no real ale and loud music playing to no-one in particular greeted my entrance. Much espousing of their karaoke night (every Thursday and 1st and 3rd Fridays of the month: 9pm-1am) and there's also a large, colourful touchscreen jukebox against the far wall. A disappointment, but if I fancy subjecting people to my rendition of Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" at least I know when to drop by.

The Rose and Crown is a decent looking pub that is situated in a good location in the middle of Hitchin.
Once inside there is a smallish single oblong shaped room with the bar on the front right side, the floor is bare boarded, there is comfy bench seating with small stools.
There were no real ales on the bar,i had a drink of keg Whitbread Best Bitter, which was a decent enough drink and a blast from the past.
I like pubs like this, just a shame there was not one real ale on the bar.
