This corner-plot pub is now under the clutches of Charles Wells (in their "Pizza, Pots & Pints" brand) and has had one of those stripped-back makeovers with exposed and distressed brick on its facade and exposed wood, brick and ceiling indoors. The pizza kitchen to the right-hand side is open plan and there's a semi-dining area in a conservatory extension out back. Four pumps, but only two in use, serving Young's Bitter and something from CW called Rendezbrew Pale Ale which was a light-coloured 3.9% hoppy beauty. Flyers on the bar advertised a beer festival at The Olde White Horse in Baldock - another pub that has experienced a similar resurrection and there were a handful of hipster-types in residence here during my brief visit. Probably only worth making the trip out of town for if you're a completest and it is a disappointment to have missed out on the Buntingford beers from its previous guise.

The interior divides neatly into a gastro style restaurant to the left, and a small drinking area to the right with just enough room for two tables and chairs, numerous bar stools,a high table and space for vertical drinking to the rear. When the barman enquired if we were just drinking this lunchtime, the game was up.It's a restaurant that sells decent real ale, with three handpumps offering on my visit a choice of two from Buntingford in Twitchell and Engineer (£3.20 and in good nick) .The house branded oversized lined glasses in probably another reason it's in the GBG,but although the interior is neat and tidy with eclectic muzak, this is far removed from a pub atmosphere.
However well worth slaking your thirst here if walking from the station to the two wonderful real ale pubs further up the road.

An excellent restaurant. Sure, it has a couple of good ales available and I'm all for that. But when you walk into the place and have a look around it is clearly not a pub.

Still, being able to have a pint of excellent Buntingford beer (and I've seen some from Nethergate in there too) with an excellent quality meal counts for something.

I've had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at The Radcliffe (not all on the same day!) and loved every meal. But this website is *pubs* galore, so I'm not giving the Radcliffe a rating.

The Radcliffe Arms is a Victorian pub in Hitchin, on the corner of Walsworth and Verulam Road. It was built around 1855.

The name is in honour of the Radcliffe family, who occupied the Priory Estate from 1548 and played an important part in the social and cultural development of the town.

Thankfully saved from another residential development, the pub is now undergoing extensive refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory, celebrating all that's great about traditional Great British pubs; cracking food, the best real ales, beers and fine wines, all served up in an atmosphere that just cannot be matched.

The Radcliffe Arms is an exciting new gastropub in Hitchin. Seating up to sixty in the restaurant and garden terrace.
