Beware of erratic opening times,this is the second time that the What Pub opening times have proved inaccurate and I have had to slope off elsewhere.I was told that it's now open at 2.30pm on Fridays,but it really is worth checking ahead.Five handpumps for real ale,but only three operational from peering in the window.A single handpump for real cider as well.

Probably the most improved pub in Hitchin in recent years.
Still a bit dingy, but that is down to Punch Taverns. Excellent beer garden at the back.
Most importantly the real ale is always excellent.

My local, since moving to Hitchin 15 months ago. The pick of the crop for the Real Ale drinker on this side of town (5 pumps). Friendly and often quiet, a locals' pub but welcoming to outsiders (such as myself, and I'm foreign even - Australian;)
There's pool, darts, and all that - but personally I'm there for the beer and conversation (that's no guarantee of quality).

A pub with something of an identity issue? Lounge area with sofas to the left of the bar contrasting with dartboard area out the back. Four handpumps incl Nethergate Old Growler (5% porter) & N'gate Azzarat were a positive aspect but I was unfortunate enough to visit the loo while I was there and the filthy condition did not reflect an attitude of care toward the pub or its customers.
