In total contrast to the other Greene King pub, The Lamb, around the corner, this one has two banks of five handpumps, each with four of them clipped with none repeated. The first bank had on GK IPA, St Austell Truibute, Ruddles County and Brain's Rev James, with the second bank having GK Abbot, Old Speckled Hen, Old Peculiar and St Austell Proper Job (£1.95 a half). It's definitely worth making the effort to walk down the counter to see what the second bank has to offer. Being a GK pub the usual glossy illustrated menus are on all the tables, in little trugs along with cutlery and condiments.

This is a very old pub - 15th Century and Grade II Listed according to WhatPub, and if so it's definitely had some external work done since then! There are low ceilings, and rough hewn beams and posts all around the pub, but in the Greene King way they've now all been painted grey. Where there would once have been a bar back there's now clinical white tiling. But furnishings are still fairly traditional with only three or four tall tables/tall stools and mainly good quality normal tables and chairs.

But not even Greene King can manage to remove all the original pub character from this place, and it's probably still one of the better pubs to be found in the centre of Romford. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in Romford.

The Golden Lion is a fairly large pub that is close to the market place.
Once inside there is an oblong shaped room which runs to the rear with the bar on the left side, this area is bare boarded, the rear area is up one step and is wider than the lower area, this area is carpeted, there is bench seating to the front and a few tall tables and chairs in the middle area, there are also normal tables and chairs, the rear has normal tables and chairs.
There was a good choice of real ales on the bar,i had a drink of Greene King Back of the Net which was a decent drink, the other beers noted were GK London Glory,Theakston Old Peculiar,Wells Bombardier,Old Speckled Hen,GK IPA and GK Abbot.
Background music was playing and there was a TV to the front right.
I thought this was a decent pub to have a drink in.
