Very nice back street local with five hand pumps serving a good variety of beer styles (see photos). My half of Gun Brewery's Scaramanga Extra Pale 3.9% £5/pint was in very good condition (NBSS 3.5). Some interesting music playing at a reasonable volume too. Good pub.

Another pub close to the station albeit up a very steep hill. A great little local with friendly service. Harvey's Best, Wye Valley HPA, London Pride, Sharps Atlantic and Seafarers Pale on when we called. We went for wye Valley which was excellent. Well worth a visit. I did notice a poster saying "Save the Battle" - there are plans to gut the place and turn it into a sports bar. There is a petition online to sign if you want to!

Unspoilt back street local, just a few yards up from the station. A U-shaped room features the bar to one side and a side room to the other. Mid-green walls and a brown ceiling don't sound great but give a nice comfortable feel to the place, helped by a fair amount of woodwork. A yard at the back provide some outdoor space. On handpump were Ubu Purity, West Berkshire Good Old Boys, Pedigree, London Pride and Harvey's Best.

Unaided by oxygen and fortified with Kendal Mint Cake carried by my trusty Sherpa, I scaled the Guildford Road pass to what by day looks like an unassuming hostelry but which in fact turned out pretty much to be the nicest pub of my 19-hole city crawl. The legend '1805' applied to the façade refers not to the pub's opening time, but the year in which Horatio Nelson defeated the combined Spanish and French navies in the Napoleonic Wars.
It has a simple interior, long and thin with the panelled bar running down part of the right side. Bare boarded, there's conventional furniture with green velour banquettes to much of the periphery. There's grub but it's not as fancy as that dished up by the Sussex Yeoman, directly opposite.
The pub seems to appeal to the city's more prosperous drinkers, though there was a pleasant mix of people in here, served by very hospitable staff.
Ales: as I had done much research during the day I forgot to record them all, but I had a very nice half of Long Man Brewery's Long Blonde at just £1.75, the cheapest half of the day.
This is a great pub and a shame that we didn't visit it as part of our crawl pilgrimage.

This is a small pub on the right hand side of the steep hill up the road on your right as you leave Brighton Station. It's bare floorboards and dimly lit as seems to be the trend nowadays. The beers on were Harvey's Best, Brain's Rev James, London Pride and Bath Gem Ales. To me this is a dull selection of beers and I wondered if this is a pubco owned pub where they can only sell beers from the provided list. Given that it was once a Watney's pub it wouldn't surprise me.
I went for the Bath Gem (£3.60) which struck me as being far too sweet, although it was in excellent condition. As far as I was concerned all the beers were boring brown bitters. I liked the pub but the beer selection completely lets it down.

Located just up the hill from the train station, this is a fairly unpretentious and welcoming boozer. The room is a slightly uneven U shape, with the bar counter serving the front and left hand side of the pub. There are banquettes under the front windows in an area which benefits from nicely muted lighting in the evenings, whilst the left hand side has limited seating options due to the space constraints, but there is still enough room to make yourself comfortable. The right hand side of the room is perhaps the nicest part of the pub with some standard tables and chairs around a couple of fireplaces and some Monet-style paintings on the walls. In fact, there are lots of old paintings dotted around the pub which help to create more of a cosy, traditional vibe than it might otherwise have had. There is also a popular garden at the rear, although I didn’t get the chance to properly explore.
The beer range wasn’t the most inspiring, but it was at least good to have a choice of ales. The line up on my visit was Black Sheep Bitter, Fullers London Pride, Harvey’s Best and Timothy Taylor Landlord with the Black Sheep that I sampled being in good shape. The staff seemed like a cheerful bunch and dealt well with the early evening crowds at the bar.
This is a solid if unspectacular pub that would be worth a look were it not for the stiff competition offered by other pubs in the area. Still worth including on a crawl but a more adventurous beer selection would make it a more vital proposition.

Steve C left this review about The Battle Of Trafalgar

The Battle of Trafalgar is up a steep back street a stones throw from Brighton Railway Station and a sign outside proudly states that there are no distractions from any television sets. Opening isn’t until midday everyday and food is served from midday until 14:30 and 18:00 until 21:00 Monday through to Friday and midday until 17:00 on Saturdays and Sundays. Children are welcome until 18:00 everyday and there is no curfew stated on our canine friends. A standard draught selection is available alongside SanMiguel and the four hand pumps were drawing Bath Ales Gem, Broadside, Pride and Harveys Best during my recent visit. The pub itself is quite thin and I’d imagine it getting a bit cramped when busy and if sitting at the tables on the right hand side it would be a trek getting to the toilets at the left rear where the door to the beer garden can be found. The garden is paved and a decent sized space, but I did feel that a few more picnic tables had been shoehorned in than comfortably fit.

I thought the service to be friendly and the Guinness was good, but the pub itself was a little uncomfortable and all of the flyers on the walls looked a bit untidy like a student bar which this place is not. I was also not that impressed with the wailing songs in the background, but I may have just been unlucky with my timing.

I think that I’d walk past this place when next in Brighton.

Much more of a pub than the Sussex Yeoman over the road but still seems to be doing it's bit to pander to the eclectic populus of Brighton. Four hand pumps and the Sussex Best was in good nick. Lots of prints of naval ships and battles as you would expect, and a similar number of old cricketers, which you wouldn't.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Battle Of Trafalgar

A really friendly pub, with the barman greeting most people by name (and getting them to sign a birthday card for an 85-year-old regular), but welcoming the casual visitor too. Even though I am no fan of things canine, even the pub dog failed to annoy me by trying to join in with reading my newspaper. Excellent pint of Harveys. All-in-all, thoroughly recommended.
