A roadside inn which has recently undergone substantial renovation, to the point that it has been stripped of its 18th Century charm. It has been a coaching inn, master’s house and maltings, and it is now a freehouse. There is a small carpark at the back, immaculately trimmed with new fencing and washed gravel, which makes it feel very suburban. There are a few seats at the front, again, nothing special. Inside there is a bar with rendered walls, the render painted an awful gunmetal grey and cut away to show the original stonework. The restaurant area has newly pointed brickwork. There are open fireplaces, though the one in the bar has been knocked through and had a woodburner installed which heats both sides of the double room. Food was very expensive, trying to emulate a bistro but not quite getting there. There is free WiFi, but it was far too much hassle to get onto it. The customers who had managed to get in before the landlord arbitrarily closed were mostly dull, irritating tourists, while some walkers and other potential customers were turned away for no reason. The landlord didn’t seem to understand his own website, and argued about what was on it even as I showed it to him. There were four ales on: I had a pint of Otter which was in excellent condition and reasonably priced. I really ought to like this place, given its beer and location, but it’s all a bit too twee for me and there are better pubs within a few miles, so I’m not sure I’ll make the effort too often.

Very pleasant country inn with a very good, if somewhat expensive, menu. Ales well kept and favours local breweries (the Hopback Brewery's 'Crop Circle' was delightful). Regular excellent Friday music evenings focus on blues, folk, jazz and country music. Landlady (?) somewhat pretentious. Above average.
