A Spoons that got a CAMRA outstanding conversion award (from a theatre/cinema) due to various features being retained and integrated into the fabric of the conversion. Inside is a classic modern Spoons over two floors, connected by an attractive staircase. The upper area is certainly the place to be where, to directly lift from another reviewer: “the reminders of the theatre include the stalls, large red velvet drapes, some reproduction stonework and pillars, some private boxes on each side and even a couple of lighting rigs”. It is certainly well-done. Three guest cask on offer but none immediately inspired (the same casks seem to have been dropped off at most of the Spoons in Cardiff and come on at the same time) so I decided to go for a craft can of loopy juice with my dinner. Friendly service from the staff. I prefer the Central as a drinking venue but this one holds enough internal interest to make it worthy of a visit.

Although this was once a theatre it was better known as a cinema in more recent times, well certainly 45 years ago. It was JDW's first outlet in Cardiff opening in Summer 1999. It's a huge cavernous space with an upstairs area that I didn't investigate.
The bar has two sets of five hand pumps that on my visit had an alarmingly poor selection of ales. The two GK beers were doubled up then there was Adnam's Broadside, London Pride, Doom Bore, Spitfire and Brain's SA. This left just the International Golden Perch brewed by Wadworth to fly the flag for anything that isn't a boring national brand. The Golden Perch was in good nick but I had a better or equally good pint of it later in the week in Wales where it was £1.99 not £2.50.
Despite the grand interior I thought this Spoons was a complete waste of time but happily found better things in the next one.

A large Wetherspoon’s pub, handily situated for the shopping, Millennium stadium and the train station. The building was a theatre in a former life, and many of the previous architectural features have been kept in place, which makes for a somewhat more interesting building than many other JDW pubs.

The decor has the is the usual corporate, bland feel that you get in any other mass produced pub, but reminders of the theatre include the stalls, large red velvet drapes, some reproduction stonework and pillars, some private boxes on each side and even a couple of lighting rigs. There’s a great view down from the upper balconies to the lower level of the pub and there are some large arched windows at the front which is a good spot and look down on the hustle and bustle outside.

Beers on this occasion were Brain’s SA, Ruddles County, Abbot Ale, Deuchars IPA and Jennings Sneck Lifter. Good choice of ciders on this occasion, no doubt due to the cider festival that they have on – Strongbow, Thatcher’s Gold, Addlestones, Mr Whithead’s Festival cider, Green Valley Strong cider, Sandford Orchard’s Devon Scrumpy and Weston’s Cider Twist Raspberry.
