The Woodman, Ashtead

This is an Ember Inns pub, and is typical of the brand with the “hotel lounge” look, and with concealed lighting, a couple of open plan fireplaces with copper surrounds, as well as the trademark drinking space dividers containing illuminated wine bottles, odd modern art vases and the like – this one even had some modern art style sculptures at the back behind the black sofas. As usual with these sorts of places, the interior rambles round various drinking and eating areas, in a way that avoids the appearance of a drinking barn. I spotted a muted TV (there were probably others that escaped my notice) showing a news channel, and some pop music being played at background volume level. The building itself is a large stand-alone affair that looks like it’s been a traditional country pub in years past – when Ashtead would have been in the heart of the countryside. There were several ales on – I noted Old Speckled Hen; London Pride; Hobgoblin; and Purity UBU, the latter at £2.80 a pint. The Hobgoblin had a battery powered pump clip, presumably a hallow’en gimmick to illuminate the clip, but which was not switched on when I was in there. I can live with the disappointment. I didn’t bother to look at a menu, but I have no doubt that it offers the usual pub grub. This is an Ember Inn so you get what it says on the tin – a clean pub/restaurant with reasonably priced food and decent ale. Just don’t expect a traditional pub experience. I certainly wouldn’t go out of my way to visit again, but it’s OK for a pint and/or a meal if you happen to be near Ashtead Station.
